What does a digital content proofreader do?

A Digital Content Proofreader is responsible for reviewing and correcting digital content, such as articles, blogs, social media posts, and website copy, to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency. They check for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting errors, as well as adherence to a company's style guide. In addition to identifying mistakes, they may also provide suggestions for improving readability and overall quality. This role is crucial for maintaining a professional online presence and ensuring that published content meets high standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a digital content proofreader?

To thrive as a Digital Content Proofreader, you need a strong command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style, often supported by a degree in English, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), proofreading tools like Grammarly, and standard style guides such as AP or Chicago Manual of Style is essential. Attention to detail, time management, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications ensure content accuracy, brand consistency, and high-quality digital publishing.

What are some common challenges faced by digital content proofreaders in fast-paced environments?

Digital Content Proofreaders often work under tight deadlines, especially when supporting marketing campaigns or frequent website updates. A key challenge is maintaining high accuracy while reviewing large volumes of content quickly, often across multiple platforms and formats. Additionally, proofreaders must stay updated on brand guidelines and digital content standards, collaborating closely with writers, designers, and project managers to ensure consistency and quality. Strong communication and time management skills are essential for balancing these demands.

What is the difference between Digital Content Proofreader vs Content Editor?

Job description

Overview
Since our founding in 1924, we've cut cardiovascular disease deaths in half, but there is still so much more to do. To overcome today's biggest health challenges and accelerate this progress, we need passionate individuals like you. Join our movement, be part of the progress, and help ensure a healthier future for all. You matter, and so does the impact you can make with us.
The American Heart Association has an exciting opportunity for a Writer, Website Content and Optimization to join our Content and Channel Strategy Team. This is a full-time, 12-month temporary contract position with the flexibility to work remotely.
This role blends website content development, audience-centered writing, UX content formatting, and content optimization. The Writer, Website Content and Optimization helps shape how audiences experience digital content by creating, updating, and refining website content that is clear, useful, discoverable, and aligned with audience needs.
You'll work across a variety of teams and subject areas, developing new website content and improving existing content to support organizational priorities, programs, products, campaigns, and health information. A significant focus of this role is helping evolve and maintain the organization's digital experience by supporting website content migration efforts, optimizing existing content, and ensuring content follows established discoverability, voice, tone, and audience experience standards.
This role is perfect for someone who enjoys translating complex information into intuitive digital experiences, understands how audiences find and consume content online, and knows how to create content that helps people quickly find, understand, and act on the information they need.
The Association offers many resources to help you maintain work-life harmonization through your changing needs and life situations. To help you be successful, you will have access to Heart U, our award-winning corporate university, as well as additional training and support, locally.
#TheAHALife is more than a company culture; it is our way of life. It embodies our commitment to work-life harmonization and is guided by our core values where our employees can thrive both personally and professionally. Discover why you will Be Seen. Be Heard. Be Valued at the American Heart Association by following us on LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, X, and at heart.jobs.
Responsibilities
  • Develop, edit, and optimize website content supporting campaigns, health information, programs, products, events, and organizational initiatives.
  • Create new website content and improve existing content to align with audience needs, organizational priorities, and digital experience goals.
  • Apply UX writing and content design principles to improve clarity, usability, navigation, and user experience across digital experiences.
  • Write content that supports discoverability through both traditional search engines and emerging AI-powered search and discovery experiences.
  • Develop content that reflects audience intent, search behavior, and various stages of the audience journey.
  • Support the transition of content from the current website to future digital experiences by editing, revising, and developing content as needed.
  • Serve as the primary content liaison between content teams and web teams, helping ensure content requirements and digital experience needs remain aligned throughout planning and implementation.
  • Collaborate with web, marketing, content, and stakeholder teams to ensure content aligns with organizational voice, tone, accessibility, and audience standards.
  • Review and refine content to improve readability, scannability, usefulness, and overall audience experience.
  • Apply established best practices for website content structure, content design, information architecture, and digital user experience.
  • Self-edit and provide final proofing to ensure accuracy, quality, consistency, and attention to detail.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving digital content, UX writing, content design, search, and AI discoverability trends to inform content development.
  • Other projects as assigned.

Qualifications
Experience & Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent. Typically requires less than two (2) years of related work experience.
  • Proven experience developing and optimizing website content for multiple audiences and business objectives.
  • Strong understanding of UX writing, content formatting, and audience-centered digital communication.
  • Experience creating content that supports discoverability through traditional search and emerging AI-powered search experiences.
  • Understanding of audience journeys, search intent, and how users find and consume information online.
  • Ability to translate complex information into clear, concise, user-friendly digital experiences.
  • Experience editing and optimizing existing content to improve usability, readability, and effectiveness.
  • Strong knowledge of website content best practices, including content structure, scannability, information architecture, and accessibility considerations.
  • Experience collaborating with web teams, marketers, strategists, and subject matter experts.
  • Strong editing, proofreading, and quality-control skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple content projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Experience with content management systems; Sitecore experience preferred.

How You Work:
  • You start with the audience, seeking to understand what they need and how content can help them accomplish their goals.
  • You think beyond the words on a page and consider the entire digital experience.
  • You create content that is useful, intuitive, and easy to navigate.
  • You balance audience needs, organizational goals, and digital best practices when developing content.
  • You can manage multiple projects and deadlines without compromising quality or consistency.
  • You collaborate naturally with partners and stakeholders while maintaining ownership of your work.
  • You welcome feedback and use it to continuously improve content quality and audience experience.

How You Think:
  • You understand that great website content helps people find answers, accomplish tasks, and take meaningful action.
  • You recognize that discoverability begins with understanding audience needs, not simply optimizing for algorithms.
  • You know how to structure content so it is easy to find, understand, and use.
  • You enjoy simplifying complexity and turning information into clear, helpful user experiences.
  • You believe great website content is not just written. It is designed to help people find what they need, understand it quickly, and confidently take the next step.
