Job description

Summary of Job The Department of Public Works is responsible for providing quality infrastructure that conveys safe, efficient delivery of essential goods and services, providing clean and beautiful public spaces that maximize the natural environment to enhance the overall quality of life and delivers professional quality public service with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Divisions include: Engineering, Streets, Sanitation, Traffic, Parks, Forestry, Motor Vehicle, and Wastewater. Under general supervision, this position performs skilled and specialized journeyman level automotive and truck repair as required of a heavy-duty truck mechanic.

This position also performs non-motorized equipment repair, and performs related work as required, including complex physical and mechanical tasks. It is imperative job duties are performed with respect, integrity, objectivity and in the best interest of the City. All City employees are expected to be honest and truthful at all times.

Responsibilities Essential Responsibilities: Performs skilled and specialized maintenance activities involving comprehensive automotive, truck, and equipment repairs, including electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems, in support of the Department of Public Works. Maintains, repairs, and overhauls all motorized and non-motorized equipment to ensure safe and efficient operation. Performs bodywork, including painting and refinishing of trucks and equipment; conducts fabrication, welding of various types, and structural framing tasks as needed.

Conducts routine preventive maintenance to keep all equipment in optimal working condition and ready for use. Adheres to and enforces all applicable safety standards and procedures; operates shop cranes, truck lifts, and related equipment safely during repair and maintenance operations. Maintains accurate records and prepares required reports.

Operates plow trucks, wings, and related snow and ice removal equipment safely and effectively; performs hauling of sand, gravel, dirt, snow, salt, garbage, yard waste, and other materials as required. General Responsibilities: Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work area, ensuring tools, equipment, and materials are properly stored and workspaces are free of hazards. Participates in regular housekeeping duties within the shop and work areas to support an efficient and safe working environment.

Communicates effectively with coworkers and supervisors to coordinate work assignments and report equipment issues. Education & Experience High School Diploma or equivalent required. At least 3 years of recent, relevant experience in automotive, truck, or heavy equipment maintenance and repair required.

Vocational Schooling or Technical Degree in Mechanics, Diesel Mechanics, or other related field preferred. Possession of a valid Wisconsin Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements B minimal, A preferable in good standing or the ability to obtain within three months of hire required. Failure to obtain or maintain will result in termination of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, drive trains, brakes, suspension, and electrical systems common to heavy duty trucks and construction equipment. Thorough knowledge of general heavy truck mechanic practices, proper uses, and techniques for using materials, equipment and power and hand tools for truck and construction equipment maintenance, repair, electrical systems, and other departmental activities. Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.

Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills and a strong sense of responsibility and initiative. Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions. Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions and the ability to comprehend blueprints, shop drawings, or sketches, and to work from these drawings.

Considerable ability in diagnosing mechanical failures and defects. Ability to provide basic and some advanced addition, subtraction, multiplication, division mathematical functions efficiently. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form with a variety of city personnel and members of the public, and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, contractors, and participants.

Work Environment: Above average physical strength and stamina is required while performing the duties of this job. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, reach, lift and handle materials which may range from 50 -75 pounds for sustained periods. This position also requires the ability to perform tasks related to repetitive motions with the use of the hands, legs, and back.

The employee frequently is required to work outdoors in all climatic conditions. Possibility for some exposure to disagreeable features using the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The employee is occasionally required to work evenings and long hours and be able to respond to call-ins after normal hours.
