Job description

Job Description:

The City of Detroit is seeking skilled Diesel Mechanics to join our dedicated team responsible for servicing and maintaining a fleet of vehicles critical to city operations, including police, fire, waste management, snowplows, rear loaders, and side loaders. The successful candidates will initially work full-time for the first 4 to 6 weeks, after which the position will transition to an on-call role, providing flexibility while still serving the community's needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance on a variety of diesel vehicles and equipment.
  • Conduct routine inspections to ensure the safety and reliability of vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot and repair issues related to heavy-duty engines, braking systems, suspension and steering, and electrical systems.
  • Maintain accurate records of service performed and parts used.
  • Collaborate with other team members to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of repairs.
  • Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment.

Job Prerequisites, Licenses, & Certifications:

  • Must be presently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
  • State of Michigan Class "B" commercial driver's license (with B endorsement) is preferred.
  • Must be State certified in 2 or more of the following areas:
    • HD Engine Repair
    • HD Braking Systems
    • HD Suspension & Steering Systems
    • HD Electrical Systems
  • Candidates must possess their own small and large hand tools, rolling tool storage, and power/air tools necessary to perform all assigned work.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; further technical training or certification in diesel mechanics is preferred.
  • Proven experience as a diesel mechanic or in a similar role.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
