What is diarrhea?

Diarrhea is a medical condition characterized by frequent, loose, or watery bowel movements. It can be caused by infections, certain medications, food intolerances, or underlying health conditions. Most cases are short-term and resolve without treatment, but persistent or severe diarrhea may require medical attention to prevent dehydration and identify the underlying cause.

Diarrhea is a symptom characterized by frequent loose stools, often caused by infections, diet, or other health issues. What are some typical daily responsibilities for a nurse specializing in gastroenterology, particularly when caring for patients with diarrhea?

Nurses specializing in gastroenterology who care for patients with diarrhea typically monitor vital signs, assess fluid and electrolyte balance, administer medications, and provide patient education on diet and hygiene. They also collaborate closely with physicians to report changes in patient condition and help develop care plans. Effective communication and empathy are essential, as patients may feel discomfort or embarrassment. Documentation and infection control are also important aspects of the daily routine.
