Devops Network Engineer information

What is a DevOps network engineer?

DevOps Network Engineers are IT professionals who blend traditional network engineering with DevOps practices to automate, manage, and optimize network infrastructure. They work on designing, deploying, and maintaining scalable networks while using tools and processes to support continuous integration, delivery, and monitoring. Their role involves automating network configuration, ensuring network security, and collaborating with software development and IT operations teams to streamline workflows. This combination of skills helps organizations achieve faster deployments, higher reliability, and improved scalability for their networked systems.

How does a DevOps network engineer typically collaborate with software development and IT operations teams?

A DevOps Network Engineer works closely with both software development and IT operations teams to ensure seamless integration of network infrastructure with application deployment processes. This involves participating in code reviews, automating network configurations, and troubleshooting connectivity issues that may arise during continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD) pipelines. Effective communication is essential, as you'll often bridge the gap between developers needing robust network environments and operations teams focused on stability and security. Regular collaboration helps identify bottlenecks early and ensures that network infrastructure evolves in tandem with application requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps network engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Network Engineer, you need strong expertise in networking concepts, infrastructure automation, and scripting, usually backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, along with certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer or Cisco CCNA/CCNP, is highly valuable. Problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability are essential soft skills for bridging development and operations teams in dynamic environments. These capabilities ensure efficient, secure, and scalable network operations that support continuous integration and deployment.

What is the difference between Devops Network Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectDevops Network EngineerNetwork Engineer
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco DevNet, AWS/Azure certificationsCCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentCloud environments, automation tools, scriptingOn-premises, hardware setup, network infrastructure
ResponsibilitiesAutomating network deployment, integrating DevOps practices, managing cloud networksDesigning, implementing, maintaining physical and virtual networks

While both roles involve networking skills, a Devops Network Engineer focuses on integrating network management within DevOps workflows and cloud environments, whereas a Network Engineer primarily manages traditional network infrastructure. The Devops Network Engineer combines networking with automation and cloud expertise, making it suitable for modern, agile IT environments.

Job description

About the Role

Skycubed is seeking a Network Engineer with an active TS/SCI clearance to support mission-critical DoD network projects in the cyber domain. The role involves designing, configuring, and maintaining secure network infrastructures, developing technical documentation, and implementing automation to streamline network operations. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with program teams, DISA, and other stakeholders to ensure network compliance, and operational readiness.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support design and engineering activities, including network engineering discussions, configuration changes, and policy implementation.
  • Modify and maintain System/Subsystem Design Documents (SSDDs) to reflect network changes and enhancements.
  • Develop MBSE models and Courses of Action (COAs) for network implementations, device types, and deployment plans.
  • Coordinate with internal teams and external agencies (e.g., DISA) for policy inputs, VPN configurations, and circuit implementations.
  • Design, configure, and replicate network perimeter lab stacks, including MPLS setups.
  • Route and terminate network cabling and configure lab network scenarios to support testing and engineering efforts.
  • Correct VPN configuration errors, coordinate amended VPN IDs with DISA, and submit required updates to support operational requirements.
  • Develop installation guides, network diagrams, and documentation.
  • Track and implement changes required on SSDDs for network perimeter and other critical components.
  • Attend and contribute to recurring sync meetings

Job Requirements

  • Active TS/SCI clearance required.
  • Extensive experience with enterprise network engineering, including MPLS, VPNs, firewalls, and lab network environments.
  • Experience with high assurance network devices, and DoD network security standards.
  • Strong knowledge of network documentation, including SSDDs, MBSE models, diagrams, and COAs.
  • Experience coordinating with DISA or similar DoD agencies for network implementations and certifications.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot, design, and replicate network environments in lab and production settings.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and syncs while maintaining accurate documentation.

Preferred Skills and Certifications

  • Hands-on experience with redundant network stacks, MPLS, and high assurance network device integration.
  • Familiarity with CAO and SNAP approval processes.
  • Experience with ATC, TSOs, and VPN member onboarding in a DoD environment.
  • Relevant certifications such as:
    • CCNP / CCIE (Routing & Switching or Security)
    • CompTIA Security+ or CASP+
    • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
    • DoD Network+/Cybersecurity certifications
