What kinds of projects and day-to-day tasks can I expect during a DevOps internship?

As a DevOps intern, you'll typically assist with automating deployment processes, managing cloud infrastructure, and monitoring system performance. Daily tasks may include writing scripts, supporting CI/CD pipelines, troubleshooting build issues, and collaborating with development and IT teams to streamline workflows. You may also gain exposure to popular tools like Docker, Jenkins, and Kubernetes, while learning best practices in version control and infrastructure-as-code. These hands-on experiences are designed to build your technical skills and prepare you for a full-time DevOps role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Intern, you need foundational knowledge of software development, system administration, and scripting languages, often supported by coursework or relevant project experience. Familiarity with tools like Git, Docker, Jenkins, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure is commonly expected, along with a basic understanding of CI/CD pipelines. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication help interns collaborate and adapt in fast-paced environments. These skills are crucial for supporting automation, improving workflows, and ensuring smooth integration between development and operations teams.

What are DevOps internships?

DevOps internships are entry-level positions designed to give students or recent graduates hands-on experience in the field of DevOps, which combines software development and IT operations. During a DevOps internship, interns typically learn about automation, continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD), cloud infrastructure, and monitoring tools. These internships help individuals develop technical skills with tools like Docker, Jenkins, Kubernetes, and various cloud platforms, while also emphasizing collaboration and problem-solving in a real-world environment. DevOps internships are a great way to gain practical knowledge, build a professional network, and increase employability in the technology sector.

Job description

Enlighten, honored as a Top Workplace from USA Today, is a leader in big data solution development and deployment, with expertise in cloud-based services, software and systems engineering, cyber capabilities, and data science. Enlighten provides continued innovation and proactivity in meeting our customers’ greatest challenges. We recognize that the most effective environment for your projects doesn’t always look the same.

Our hybrid work approach ensures that you can make lasting relationships with your team and collaborate in-person to get the job done—while having the flexibility to work from home when needed to achieve focused results. Job Description This is an UNPAID internship through the DoD SkillBridge Program for transitioning active-duty US military personnel. DoD SkillBridge Internships are available to help transitioning active-duty military personnel gain real-world experience in the work force sometime during their final 180 days of active-duty service.

The intern will actively train on meaningful projects and work closely with a mentor and with senior company leadership. Enlighten Internship programs are focused on placing transitioning military into internships that require KSAs, Education & Military Training similar to their current or previous military jobs; positions that could easily transition over to a full-time regular and permanent job with Enlighten. Essential Job Responsibilities The SkillBridge intern will train as a DevOps Engineer with Enlighten, reporting to a designated Enlighten Supervisor, with the goal of learning Enlighten’s Enterprise approach to design, build, and optimize Joint Cyber Warfighter Architecture (JCWA) Common Runtime Stack for Data (JCRS-D) systems for automated deployments, scalable infrastructure, and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines.

The intern will be assigned special projects as needed. Desired End State (3-4 month target) At the end of four months, the intern will be able to understand basic DevOps engineer concepts. DevOps engineers, as part of enterprise teams, manage, optimize, oversee, and monitor infrastructure deployment, application integration, and operational automation throughout the JCRS-D enclaves.

The intern will develop a good understanding of all critical tasks to successfully conduct devops engineer objectives: Manage and configure Linux-based systems using Bash. Develop automation scripts using Python to streamline operational tasks. Provision and manage cloud infrastructure using Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS).

Orchestrate and deploy containerized applications using Kubernetes. Develop and manage Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines. Identify ways to improve system reliability, deployment efficiency, and code quality.

Use data and operational metrics to discover tasks that can be automated. Enlighten will benefit from the military background of the SkillBridge intern and considers the SkillBridge internship an overall positive experience. Assumptions/Restrictions If candidate is selected and approved, SkillBridge Intern can travel in conjunction with this internship; Enlighten will fund all travel costs.

SkillBridge Intern will be available during core hours for critical meetings and training.
