Sigma Systems Inc. is seeking a Remote Software Engineer – COBOL/Mainframe Developer to join a dynamic software engineering team responsible for developing, maintaining, and enhancing enterprise Mainframe applications. This role is ideal for an experienced COBOL developer who thrives in Agile environments and is passionate about delivering reliable, scalable, and high-quality software solutions.

Position Details

Job Title: Remote Software Engineer – COBOL/Mainframe Developer

Duration: 6-Month Contract

Location: 100% Remote

Schedule: Monday–Friday, Normal Business Hours

Job Summary

The Software Engineer – COBOL/Mainframe Developer will be responsible for designing, developing, maintaining, and supporting enterprise Mainframe applications using COBOL. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), ensuring applications meet business requirements while maintaining high standards for performance, quality, and maintainability.

The ideal candidate has strong hands-on Mainframe development experience, is proficient in COBOL programming, and is comfortable working in an Agile/Scrum environment.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, maintain, and enhance enterprise Mainframe applications using COBOL.
  • Analyze business and technical requirements and translate them into efficient software solutions.
  • Develop well-structured, maintainable, and documented code following established coding standards.
  • Maintain and update existing Mainframe applications while ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
  • Participate in code reviews and contribute to software engineering best practices.
  • Utilize GitLab for source control, version management, and code collaboration.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation for software development and application processes.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, backlog refinement, and retrospectives.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, perform root cause analysis, and implement effective solutions.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders, QA teams, and fellow developers throughout the SDLC.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required QualificationsEducation
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
Required Experience

Mandatory

  • Minimum 3 years of experience designing scalable, highly available software solutions using algorithms, data structures, and design patterns.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on COBOL Mainframe programming experience.
  • Strong experience working with Mainframe technologies.
  • Proficiency in COBOL programming.
  • Experience using GitLab for source control and version management.
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical code documentation and software processing documentation.
