They typically assist in managing code releases, infrastructure as code, and monitoring systems while ensuring continuous integration and delivery pipelines run smoothly. DevOps Associates often work with cloud platforms, configuration management tools, and scripting languages to optimize software development and deployment cycles. Their role is vital in reducing manual errors, increasing efficiency, and ensuring rapid delivery of high-quality software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Associate, you need a solid understanding of software development, system administration, and automation, often complemented by a degree in computer science or related field. Job description

Driven to be the Best
People. Performance. Purpose.
At Avis Budget Group, we're driven to be the best vehicle rental company in the world, together. Our 25,000 employees raise the bar every day, bringing different perspectives, taking ownership, and leading with integrity. We're defining the future of mobility with safe, sustainable solutions that move people, businesses, and communities forward.
We are seeking a hands-on Lead Engineer to design, build, and operate mission-critical enterprise applications on a modern Java stack deployed to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI). You will lead a team of engineers through the full software delivery lifecycle - architecture, development, testing, deployment, and production support - while setting technical direction and raising the bar for engineering quality across the team.
This role sits at the intersection of deep technical leadership and delivery ownership. You will partner closely with product, architecture, security, and infrastructure teams to modernize legacy systems, drive cloud-native adoption on OCI, and integrate with other enterprise applications.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead the design and development of scalable, secure, high-availability services using Java and microservices patterns.
  • Own end-to-end solution architecture for applications deployed on OCI, including compute (OKE, VM instances), storage, and Autonomous Database / Oracle DB.
  • Provide technical leadership to a team of 4-8 engineers and perform code reviews, design reviews, mentoring, and career development.
  • Define and enforce engineering standards - coding guidelines, branching strategy, test coverage, observability, and CI/CD practices.
  • Drive cloud migration and modernization initiatives, including refactoring monolithic applications into containerized services on Oracle Kubernetes Engine (OKE).
  • Build and maintain integrations with enterprise systems.
  • Implement robust security practices: OAuth 2.0 / OIDC, secrets management (OCI Vault), IAM policies, network segmentation, and data classification compliance.
  • Ensure production reliability through monitoring, alerting, and incident response using OCI Observability (Logging, Monitoring, APM) or equivalent tooling.
  • Collaborate with product owners and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical roadmaps, estimates, and delivery plans.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies (including AI/agentic capabilities on OCI) and make build-vs-buy and vendor recommendations.

Perks You'll Get:
  • Access to Medical, Dental, Vision, Life and Disability insurance
  • Eligible to elect other voluntary benefits including: Group Auto Insurance, Group Home Insurance, Pet Insurance, Legal Assistance, Identity Theft Protection, FSA, Accident Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance, and additional life insurance coverages
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan with company matched contributions
  • Full training to learn the business and enhance professional skills
  • Employee discounts, including discounted prices on the purchase of Avis/Budget cars
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program for services including counseling, financial and legal consultation, referrals for care service and more

What We're Looking For:
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with 5+ years in Java backend development (Java 11+, Spring Boot, JPA/Hibernate, RESTful APIs).
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - compute, OKE, networking, IAM, Autonomous Database, Object Storage, and OCI DevOps or equivalent CI/CD tooling.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams or serving as tech lead on complex, multi-team initiatives.
  • Strong grounding in microservices architecture, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and API design.
  • Experience with relational databases (Oracle DB preferred) - schema design, performance tuning, PL/SQL a plus.
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, or OCI DevOps), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), and Git-based workflows.
  • Working knowledge of application security fundamentals: authentication/authorization patterns, encryption at rest/in transit, secure SDLC.
  • Excellent communication skills - able to present technical trade-offs to senior leadership and translate business needs into engineering plans.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • OCI certifications (e.g., OCI Architect Associate/Professional, OCI DevOps Professional).
    • Experience integrating with Oracle Fusion ERP/EPM is a plus.
    • Background in billing, payments, finance, or other transaction-heavy enterprise domains.
    • Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, OCI Streaming, OCI Queue).
    • Exposure to data platforms on OCI (Data Lake, GoldenGate, Oracle AI Data Platform).
    • Familiarity with legacy modernization: mainframe/monolith decomposition, OS and middleware upgrades.
    • Experience operating in regulated or multi-region environments (e.g., EMEA data retention and compliance requirements).

The annual starting salary for this position is between $130,000 - $140,000 annually. Factors that may affect starting pay within this range include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.
