What is a Developer Project Manager?

A Developer Project Manager is a professional who oversees software development projects from inception to completion. They bridge the gap between technical development teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Their responsibilities include planning project timelines, coordinating team members, managing risks, and tracking progress. Developer Project Managers often have a background in software development, which helps them understand technical challenges and communicate effectively with developers.

What does a Developer Project Manager do?

A Developer Project Manager often wears two hats—leading the project while contributing technically. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and prioritization skills. Generally, the project manager will allocate specific hours for coding or technical reviews and dedicate separate blocks for meetings, planning, and stakeholder communication. Clear delegation of tasks to team members and the use of project management tools also help maintain this balance, ensuring neither aspect is neglected. This hybrid role offers valuable insight into both project oversight and technical execution, making it ideal for professionals who enjoy both leadership and hands-on work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer Project Manager?

To thrive as a Developer Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a deep understanding of software development processes, and usually a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira or Trello, agile methodologies, and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are often required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help foster collaboration between technical teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the desired quality standards in a dynamic tech environment.

Salary: $90,000 – $135,000 (Commensurate with experience) + Performance Incentives

Position Overview

Are you an MEP project manager ready to break free from basic coordination and claim true ownership over high-stakes, multidisciplinary engineering initiatives? This is your opportunity to architect the future of critical infrastructure. Whether stepping in as a Project Manager I or II, you will steer high-impact MEP projects from early-stage planning through construction closeout. You will operate as a vital leader balancing technical execution, client relationship management, and project profitability, thriving in an environment where accountability, proactive leadership, and strategic communication are deeply rewarded.

Joining our team means stepping into a collaborative, growth-oriented culture that blends technical rigor with authentic professional empowerment. In this role, you are trusted to influence project direction, pioneer operational efficiencies, and build legacy-defining client relationships across mission critical, aviation, government, and advanced commercial sectors. With an expansive portfolio of technically demanding work and a robust internal structure for professional advancement, this platform is specifically engineered to accelerate your trajectory toward executive-level leadership.

Core Responsibilities

  • Project Stewardship: Lead all phases of multidisciplinary MEP engineering projects—including planning, design coordination, construction administration, and final closeout—ensuring every milestone is met on schedule and within budget.

  • Multidisciplinary Coordination: Integrate complex mechanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, architectural, civil, and technology systems, fostering total alignment between internal engineering teams, sub-consultants, and ownership groups.

  • Client & Stakeholder Management: Serve as the primary, authoritative point of contact for clients, contractors, and stakeholders, transforming project challenges into opportunities to develop and strengthen long-term relationships.

  • Financial & Resource Strategy: Manage project schedules, staffing, scopes, and budgets, providing strategic oversight to maximize performance and deliver profitable, high-fidelity project outcomes.

  • Construction Administration Authority: Oversee comprehensive field and construction activities, including the critical evaluation of RFIs, submittals, change orders, site visits, and complex field coordination issues.

  • Quality Assurance & Compliance: Review technical documentation, engineering drawings, and specifications to proactively resolve constructability concerns, coordination issues, and building code compliance gaps.

  • Team Mentorship & Growth: Direct project teams, mentor junior project managers and engineering staff, and assist with recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding top-tier talent to scale team capabilities.

  • Complex Portfolio Leadership: Spearhead larger, highly sophisticated engineering endeavors, including high-impact mission critical and infrastructure projects with design fees exceeding $1 million.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Electrical, or Architectural Engineering (or a closely related engineering discipline) from an accredited university.

  • Experience:

    • Project Manager I: 0–5 years of progressive experience within an MEP engineering environment or related AEC consulting industry.

    • Project Manager II: 5+ years of dedicated MEP engineering and project management experience.

  • Technical Acumen: Strong, comprehensive understanding of building systems, multidisciplinary workflows, and applicable building codes.

  • Software Proficiency: Working knowledge and comfortable command of AutoCAD, Revit, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Leadership Capabilities: Proven ability to manage schedules, budgets, staffing allocations, and project records effectively.

  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to facilitate alignment and lead high-level stakeholder meetings.

  • Travel: Ability to travel approximately 10% as required to meet project and client needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer In Training (EIT) certification strongly preferred.

  • Sector Expertise: Proven success managing and delivering complex projects within the mission critical, data center, aviation, or higher education sectors.

  • Financial Excellence: A track record of delivering complex, multi-discipline engineering projects profitably and with minimal scope creep.

  • Operational Leadership: Advanced experience leading, mentoring, and developing junior engineering talent and project staff.
