What is a Developer Project Manager?

A Developer Project Manager is a professional who oversees software development projects from inception to completion. They bridge the gap between technical development teams and business stakeholders, ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards. Their responsibilities include planning project timelines, coordinating team members, managing risks, and tracking progress. Developer Project Managers often have a background in software development, which helps them understand technical challenges and communicate effectively with developers.

What does a Developer Project Manager do?

A Developer Project Manager often wears two hats—leading the project while contributing technically. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management and prioritization skills. Generally, the project manager will allocate specific hours for coding or technical reviews and dedicate separate blocks for meetings, planning, and stakeholder communication. Clear delegation of tasks to team members and the use of project management tools also help maintain this balance, ensuring neither aspect is neglected. This hybrid role offers valuable insight into both project oversight and technical execution, making it ideal for professionals who enjoy both leadership and hands-on work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer Project Manager?

To thrive as a Developer Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a deep understanding of software development processes, and usually a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Jira or Trello, agile methodologies, and certifications such as PMP or Scrum Master are often required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help foster collaboration between technical teams and stakeholders. These skills ensure projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the desired quality standards in a dynamic tech environment.

Can a developer be a project manager?

A developer can transition into a project management role, especially if they develop skills in planning, communication, and leadership. Many project managers in tech have backgrounds in development and obtain certifications like PMP or Scrum Master to support their transition.

Job description

About Us:

Kelley Engineered Equipment (KEE) designs and builds highly customized equipment for the tunneling and underground construction industry.

We solve complex, real-world problems by delivering custom-engineered systems that perform in demanding environments. Our work is fast-paced, hands-on, and requires a high level of ownership and accountability.

The Role:

KEE is seeking a Project Manager to lead complex, custom equipment projects from concept through delivery.

This role owns the full project lifecycle, working across engineering and production to deliver high-quality systems on time and on budget.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the project lifecycle: from initial client contact through delivery and close-out
  • Own project financials: estimate, track costs, and manage invoicing and payments
  • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules: ensure milestones and deliverables are met
  • Coordinate cross-functional internal teams (engineering, procurement, and production)
  • Oversee procurement: vendor selection, negotiation, and contracts
  • Monitor progress and proactively resolve risks or delays
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, managing expectations and resolving issues
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and regulatory standards
  • Travel to job sites as needed (~10-20%)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field)
  • Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Strong financial acumen (budgeting, cost control, forecasting)
  • Experience coordinating cross-functional technical teams
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills
  • Ability to manage demanding clients and resolve conflicts

Preferred Experience

  • Custom equipment or engineered-to-order manufacturing
  • Tunneling, underground construction, or heavy civil projects
  • Familiarity with project scheduling tools (Wrike, MS Project, or similar)
  • ERP or project cost tracking systems

Benefits

  • Competitive Salary
  • Paid time off starting at 3 weeks.
  • Paid health insurance.
  • Health savings account, with company contribution.
  • IRA with employer match.
  • Life insurance and long-term disability.
  • Parental leave.

KEE offers a fast-paced, hands-on environment where integrity, responsibility, teamwork, and the ability to learn and work hard are central to everything we do. If you're ready to grow your career managing complex, high-impact projects, we'd like to hear from you.
