What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a detailer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Detailer, you need strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and knowledge of cleaning and restoration techniques, often supported by a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with specialized cleaning tools, polishing equipment, and detailing products is typically required. Excellent customer service skills, time management, and reliability help detailers stand out in delivering exceptional results. These abilities are crucial for maintaining high client satisfaction and ensuring vehicles meet quality standards.

What is a detail?

Detailers, often referred to as automotive detailers, are professionals who clean and restore vehicles to a like-new condition. They perform thorough cleaning, polishing, and preservation of both the interior and exterior of cars, trucks, and other vehicles. This can include washing, waxing, vacuuming, cleaning windows, and treating upholstery. Detailers may work for car dealerships, auto body shops, or detailing businesses, and their work helps maintain a vehicle's appearance and value.

What is the difference between Detail vs Data Entry Clerk?

AspectDetailData Entry Clerk

Work environmentOffice settings, manufacturing, or technical environmentsOffice environments, administrative settings
Employer usageUsed in industries requiring detailed technical or product informationCommon in administrative and clerical roles

While both roles involve handling information, a Detail typically refers to a position focused on precise, technical, or specialized information, often requiring specific training. A Data Entry Clerk primarily manages data input tasks in administrative settings. The key difference lies in the complexity and nature of the information handled, with Details often requiring more technical knowledge and attention to detail.

Do detailers make good money?

Auto detailers can earn an average hourly wage ranging from minimum wage to over $15, depending on experience, location, and whether they work for a dealership or independently. Skilled detailers with certifications and specialized tools may increase their earning potential, especially with repeat clients or premium services.

What are typical challenges faced by automotive detailers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Automotive detailers often encounter challenges such as working with stubborn stains, maintaining high-quality results under time constraints, and adapting to various vehicle types and customer expectations. Managing these challenges requires strong attention to detail, efficient time management, and staying updated on the latest cleaning techniques and products. Collaborating with team members and maintaining open communication with supervisors can also help ensure consistent results and a supportive work environment.

Job description

Description

Gresham, OR | Toyota | Trusted, Iconic brand | Flat-rate | 1 year experience required | $60,000 - $80,000/yr | Veterans encouraged to apply

Swickard Auto Group is a hospitality company that happens to sell and service cars. We believe the best guest experiences start with the best employee experiences. That's why we've grown to 40+ rooftops across the West Coast, Alaska, and Hawaii while maintaining a culture built on one simple idea: do right by people, every time.

At Gresham Toyota, the Detail Technician is a critical part of how we present our vehicles and deliver on the guest experience. Every car that leaves our lot is a reflection of our standard -- and on a flat-rate structure, your speed, consistency, and quality directly determine what you earn.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Perform thorough interior and exterior detail work on new, used, and service vehicles -- washing, vacuuming, polishing, and protecting to dealership standards

Prepare vehicles for guest delivery -- ensuring every car is clean, presentable, and ready to make a strong first impression

Apply paint protection, fabric protection, and aftermarket appearance products as directed

Inspect vehicles for cosmetic issues -- scratches, stains, and odors -- and address or escalate appropriately

Operate detail equipment including pressure washers, buffers, vacuums, and steam cleaners safely and effectively

Maintain an organized, clean, and safe detail bay and work area at all times

Coordinate with service advisors, porters, and sales staff to prioritize vehicle readiness and meet delivery timelines

Work efficiently on a flat-rate structure -- your throughput, speed, and quality directly drive your earnings

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

1+ year of detailing experience required -- dealership detail experience a strong plus

A high personal standard for quality -- you notice what others miss and won't put your name on work that isn't right

Self-directed and productive -- flat rate rewards speed and consistency, and you need both

Comfortable operating detail equipment safely and effectively

Physically capable of standing, bending, and working on your feet throughout the shift

Reliable and punctual -- the detail bay supports every department and the whole store notices when it runs well

Valid driver's license with a clean driving record

A team-first mindset -- your output touches every corner of the operation

WHAT WE OFFER

Income potential of $60,000 - $80,000/yr -- your efficiency and quality directly drive your earnings

Medical, dental, and vision insurance

Life insurance and supplemental coverage options

Paid time off and paid holidays

Clear career path -- motivated detail techs grow into porter, service support, parts, and advisor roles at Swickard

Employee vehicle purchase and service discounts

A stable, team-oriented work environment where your output is visible and your effort is valued

WHY GRESHAM TOYOTA

Toyota is one of the most trusted and in-demand brands on the road -- consistent volume means steady flat-rate opportunity every day

Gresham is a growing community in the Portland metro area -- a store where reliability and quality build a reputation that follows you

Flat-rate detail pay rewards the people who work with speed, care, and consistency -- the harder you work, the more you earn

Swickard is one of the fastest-growing dealer groups in the country -- ranked Top 5 in North America for reputation in the automotive industry

A store where strong performers are noticed and developed -- entry-level doesn't mean overlooked

Our HEART values -- Honor, Engage, Anticipate, Respond, Thank -- apply to every role on the team, not just the ones facing guests

Gresham Toyota runs a busy, high-volume operation with consistent vehicle flow and a team that respects the people who take their craft seriously. On a flat-rate structure, a detail technician who works with speed and holds their standard can build real earning power -- and a career from the detail bay up.

If you have a year of detailing experience, a high standard for your work, and you're ready for a role where your effort directly drives your income -- we'd like to meet you.
