Job description

Mechanical Designer
Department: Engineering
Employment Type: Full Time
Location: Louisville, CO
Compensation: $80,000 - $120,000 / year
Description
Stratom, Inc. is a mission-driven engineering company building autonomous and unmanned off-highway vehicles and related robotic systems. Our systems operate in demanding real-world environments, where performance, reliability, and engineering discipline are essential. Integrating advanced autonomy with rugged industrial hardware for austere conditions.
Our work spans the full lifecycle of complex systems, from early concept and prototyping through fielded deployment. With multiple working prototypes in hand, we are entering the critical phase of transitioning these platforms into production over the coming years to deliver capable systems at scale. We are looking for talented and experienced engineers who want to take ownership of hard problems and play a key role in bringing multiple platforms into production.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Mechanical Designer will support the development of aerospace and defense products through detailed mechanical design, CAD modeling, engineering documentation, and manufacturing support. This role works closely with mechanical engineers, manufacturing teams, suppliers, and production personnel to develop accurate, producible designs.
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented designer who enjoys turning concepts into manufacturable hardware, creating high-quality engineering drawings, supporting prototype builds, and helping improve products through the design and production lifecycle.
Qualifications
Requirements
  • Education + Experience
    • Associate degree, technical degree, or equivalent experience in Mechanical Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
    • 3+ years of experience in mechanical design, drafting, or product development.
    • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, automotive, robotics, industrial equipment, or other complex mechanical systems is preferred
  • Don't meet every qualification? We encourage you to apply. If you're excited about this opportunity and believe your experience aligns with most of the qualifications, we'd like to hear from you. We value diverse backgrounds, unique perspectives, and a willingness to learn.
  • Required Qualifications
    • Proficiency with Solidworks 3D CAD Software.
    • Experience creating:
      • 3D part and assembly models
      • Detailed manufacturing drawings
      • Assembly documentation
      • Engineering change documentation
    • Understanding of GD&T principles and tolerance application.
    • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
    • Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies including:
      • Machined components
      • Weldments and structural components
      • Sheet metal parts
      • Brackets, fixtures, and structural components
      • Hardware integration and packaging
    • Understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, finishing, and assembly.
    • Ability to collaborate with engineers and manufacturing personnel to resolve design issues.
    • Experience supporting prototype builds, production assembly, and design improvements.

Preferred Skills
  • Experience working in an Aerospace, Defense, or highly regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with configuration management and engineering change processes.
  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
  • Experience designing weight-optimized structures, enclosures, mechanisms, or electromechanical assemblies.
  • Experience supporting supplier or manufacturing reviews.
  • Familiarity with specifying coatings or corrosion protection.
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication, assembly, testing, or inspection processes.

Soft Skills
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to design accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work within a cross-functional team.
  • Practical problem-solving approach with a focus on manufacturable solutions.
  • Ability to take ownership of assigned designs and follow projects through completion.
  • Positive, collaborative attitude with a willingness to learn and grow.
