What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Responsible Engineer (DRE), and why are they important?

To excel as a Design Responsible Engineer (DRE), you need a solid background in mechanical or electrical engineering, experience in product development, and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, PLM systems, and industry standards, as well as certifications like PE (Professional Engineer), are often required. Strong project management, problem-solving, and cross-functional communication skills make a DRE stand out. These abilities ensure successful design delivery, effective collaboration, and high-quality products that meet specifications and regulatory requirements.

What are the main challenges a Design Responsible Engineer (DRE) faces when managing cross-functional teams during a product development cycle?

A Design Responsible Engineer (DRE) often encounters challenges in aligning the objectives and timelines of multiple cross-functional teams, such as design, manufacturing, and quality assurance. Ensuring clear communication and timely resolution of design issues while balancing technical requirements with project constraints is crucial. The DRE must also manage changes in customer requirements and maintain compliance with industry standards, all while overseeing documentation and design validation. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills help meet these challenges and ensure successful product launches.

What is a Design Responsible Engineer (DRE)?

A Design Responsible Engineer (DRE) is a professional who oversees the design, development, and integration of specific components or systems within a larger engineering project, typically in the automotive or manufacturing industries. The DRE is responsible for ensuring that their designated parts meet quality, cost, and timing requirements, and that they comply with all relevant standards and regulations. They act as the primary point of contact between design teams, suppliers, and other stakeholders, coordinating activities to resolve technical issues and drive the product from concept to production.

What is the difference between Design Responsible Engineer Dre vs Design Responsible Engineer Dre?

AspectDesign Responsible Engineer Dre

The Active Aerodynamic System Design Responsible Engineer (DRE) owns the design and engineering release of active aero systems (e.g., active grille shutters, active air dams) for production vehicles. This role defines and delivers component-level objectives aligned to vehicle functional targets and leads the system from concept and packaging through design, analysis, validation, and launch, coordinating suppliers and cross-functional teams and supporting testing, plant activities, and issue resolution.
This is a Product Engineer / Design Responsible Engineer role for active aerodynamic systems. It is not a CAD designer, CFD engineer, or software developer role. The engineer will own systems end to end and lead suppliers who design and develop the hardware.
The Active Aerodynamic System Design Responsible Engineer (DRE) responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead supplier design reviews and ensure designs meet requirements and specifications.
  • Deliver systems that meet quality, performance, timing, weight, and cost targets.
  • Collaborate with advanced engineering to define and package designs prior to sourcing.
  • Provide regional, on-site mechatronics component support as needed.
  • Develop and maintain boundary diagrams, interface matrices, parameter diagrams, DFMEA, and DVP&R.
  • Ensure integration with adjacent components, network communications, and ECUs.
  • Manage design integrity and releasing in NX/Teamcenter, including EBOM, change management (CCD/WebCN), and hardware/software releases/changes (including DVP&Rs).
  • Plan and execute analysis and validation activities (e.g., CAE/CFD, kinematic/compliance modeling), including benchmarking and competitive/technology investigations.
  • Drive issue management, root cause analysis, and corrective actions; support quality and warranty initiatives and field concerns.
  • Support RFQ activities, technical evaluations, and business cases; identify innovative, cost-effective solutions to meet functional objectives.
  • Own program timing and deliverables, meeting vehicle program milestones and communicating status via issue lists, timelines, and technical presentations.
  • Coordinate regulatory compliance activities with suppliers and internal compliance teams.
  • Direct suppliers in developing, testing, and releasing hardware and software to meet vehicle- and subsystem-level functional/behavior objectives; support requirements development with EE systems engineering (VF specs) and supplier requirements analysis (RAR).

Primary systems include:
  • Active Grille Shutters
  • Active Air Dams
  • Future rebalancing could include other mechatronic or exterior commodities such as mirrors, alerting systems, or wiping and washing systems.

Job Requirements
Details:
Must Have Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years of product development experience preferred (less than 5 years must include strong justification with strong relevant experience but absolutely no less than 3 years)
  • Able to work independently and "hit the ground running"
  • Comfortable owning a component or system from concept through launch
  • Experience with mechatronics or moving systems
  • Examples include actuators, deployable mechanisms, shutters, flaps, cooling systems, or other electromechanical products
  • Experience owning supplier designed components
  • Experience leading suppliers and holding them accountable
  • Familiarity with system integration into the vehicle
  • Understands requirements, testing, launch, and validation activities

Nice to have experience
  • Exterior components or plastics experience
  • Injection molding or design for assembly exposure
  • Plant or launch experience
  • Ability to read and understand CFD reports (not perform them)
  • Aero experience is helpful but not required

What This Role Is Not
  • Not a CAD or studio designer role
  • Not a CFD / CAE specialist role
  • Not a software engineering role Software and aero knowledge are useful at a system level, but this role does not write code or perform deep analysis.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree required
    1. Mechanical Engineering
    2. Electrical Engineering
    3. Mechatronics
    4. Other degrees may be considered only with strong, relevant product experience

Travel & Work Schedule
  • Travel is typically less than 20 percent
  • Mostly local to the Metro Detroit area
