Design Engineer Remote Solidworks information

How do remote Design Engineers using SolidWorks typically collaborate with team members on complex projects?

Remote Design Engineers using SolidWorks often collaborate through cloud-based platforms and specialized project management tools to share models and updates in real time. They frequently participate in virtual meetings, screen-sharing sessions, and use shared file repositories to review designs and provide feedback. Clear communication and version control are essential to ensure that all team members are aligned and that design iterations are tracked efficiently. This collaborative approach allows teams to work seamlessly across different locations while maintaining high productivity and design quality.

What does a remote Design Engineer using SolidWorks do?

A remote Design Engineer who uses SolidWorks is responsible for creating, modifying, and analyzing 3D models and engineering drawings for various products or components. They collaborate with teams virtually to design parts, assemblies, and systems, ensuring they meet technical specifications and industry standards. Using SolidWorks, they can simulate how a design will perform, identify potential issues, and help streamline the manufacturing process—all while working from a remote location. Their work is crucial in product development, prototyping, and improving existing designs.

What is the difference between Design Engineer Remote Solidworks vs Mechanical Drafter?

AspectDesign Engineer Remote SolidworksMechanical Drafter
CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or related field, Solidworks certificationAssociate's or Bachelor's in Drafting/Design, proficiency in CAD software
Work EnvironmentRemote, collaborative with engineering teamsOffice or remote, focused on drafting and documentation
Industry UsageProduct design, engineering developmentManufacturing, construction, product documentation

Design Engineer Remote Solidworks professionals focus on designing and developing products using Solidworks, often requiring engineering credentials. Mechanical Drafters primarily create detailed drawings and documentation, with less emphasis on engineering analysis. Both roles may work remotely but serve different stages of the product development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design Engineer (Remote, SolidWorks), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Engineer working remotely with SolidWorks, you need a solid background in mechanical or product design, a relevant engineering degree, and proficiency in 3D CAD modeling. Expertise in SolidWorks software, familiarity with PLM/PDM systems, and, in some cases, certification such as CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional) are typically required. Strong problem-solving, time management, and clear communication skills set standout professionals apart, especially in remote roles. These abilities ensure precise, innovative designs, effective collaboration, and on-time project delivery in a virtual engineering environment.

Job description

PND Engineers is seeking a licensed Civil Design Engineer to join either our Anchorage or Palmer, Alaska, offices. This role is ideal for professionals who enjoy solving complex design challenges, mentoring junior staff, and contributing to a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment. This position will support and lead site civil development on infrastructure projects throughout Alaska, from public and commercial buildings to waterfront development, recreational facilities, utilities, and transportation projects. From preliminary engineering and field reconnaissance through final design, bidding, and construction support, this is an opportunity to work on a wide range of civil engineering projects while contributing to practical, meaningful infrastructure in Alaska's challenging environments.

What You Will Do:

  • Under the general direction of a Principal Engineer, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams, including civil, structural, geotechnical, environmental, survey, utility, hydrology, coastal, and construction personnel.
  • Prepare and oversee production of engineering deliverables, including plans, specifications, estimates, calculations, design reports, and other technical documents.
  • Support construction administration and inspection efforts.
  • Mentor and provide technical guidance to junior engineers, EITs, designers, and technical staff.
  • Occasionally travel within Alaska for site visits and progress inspections.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • Professional Civil Engineer registration in Alaska, or current PE registration in Civil Engineering from another U.S. jurisdiction with the ability to obtain Alaska registration within 6 months of hire.
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional civil engineering experience. Experience in construction, transportation, or water/wastewater utility design is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and coordinate with clients, agencies, subconsultants, and internal project teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and Civil 3D, as well as other engineering software applications.
  • Excellent time management skills, and ability to produce accurate, efficient work within budget and time constraints.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel for inspection, site assessments, and project coordination. Some overnight or multi-day trips may be required. Travel requirement is less than 10%.
  • Valid U.S. drivers' license and good driving record required.
  • Permanent authorization to work in the United States without need for employer sponsorship.

Experience in construction, transportation, or water/wastewater utility design is a plus.

  • Comprehensive medical plans
  • Employer-paid dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Disability insurance
  • 18-22 days of paid time off and 9 paid holidays annually
  • All overtime paid at 1.5x the regular hourly rate
  • Discretionary bonuses
  • Exceptional, employer-funded 401(k) profit-sharing retirement plan-no match required
