What is a design associate?

Design Associates are entry- to mid-level professionals who support design teams in creating visual concepts, layouts, and presentations for projects across industries such as graphic design, interior design, fashion, and architecture. They assist senior designers by conducting research, preparing materials, and using design software to bring creative ideas to life. Design Associates often collaborate with clients and other team members to ensure that the final product aligns with project goals and brand standards.

What are some common challenges design associates face when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Design Associates often juggle several projects at once, which can make managing deadlines and shifting priorities a challenge. Effective communication with team members and clear organization of tasks are essential to ensure all projects move forward smoothly. Additionally, adapting quickly to feedback from clients or senior designers is key, as project requirements can change rapidly. Building strong time management skills and staying flexible will help you thrive in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Associate, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in graphic design, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate creatively are essential soft skills. These skills and qualities enable effective project execution, ensure design consistency, and foster successful teamwork in a fast-paced creative environment.

Job description

Position Summary
PacSci EMC is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to support the design, development, improvement, production, and sustainment of ordnance components and systems for mission-critical products supporting the U.S. warfighter. This role partners closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Test, and Program Management throughout the product lifecycle. The Senior Design Engineer is expected to operate with a higher level of responsibility, independence, and engineering judgment, requiring less frequent coaching and direction.
Primary Responsibilities
• Independently sustain, develop, and improve ordnance product mechanical designs from concept through production.
• Perform engineering analysis, make sound technical decisions, and prepare complete engineering documentation with limited oversight.
• Lead and support production, and sustainment engineering activities.
• Provide day-to-day engineering support to Manufacturing and Quality, independently resolving routine technical issues and escalating higher-risk matters appropriately.
• Lead root cause investigations, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement with a high degree of ownership.
• Maintain engineering drawings, bills of material, and Oracle Agile PLM configuration records with strong attention to configuration control.
• Collaborate effectively with Integrated Product Teams across the product lifecycle and serve as a dependable technical contributor on cross-functional efforts.
• Support proposal efforts, technical evaluations, and engineering decision-making as required.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred. Aerospace Engineering or another closely related engineering discipline may also be considered.
• Typically 5+ years of relevant mechanical engineering, product design, manufacturing support, and/or ordnance design experience.
• Demonstrated experience creating and interpreting engineering drawings and applying GD&T.
• Demonstrated experience with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred; equivalent platforms acceptable).
• Strong communication skills, sound engineering judgment, and the ability to work independently within a cross-functional manufacturing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
• Aerospace, Defense, ordnance, or other highly regulated product-development experience.
• Manufacturing support experience in a hands-on engineering environment.
• Oracle Agile PLM or comparable product lifecycle/configuration management experience.
• DOE, DFMA, FMEA, failure analysis, thermal/heat-transfer analysis, fluid analysis, or engineering simulation experience.
• ANSYS, SolidWorks CAE, or comparable simulation tools.
• Machine shop, fabrication, prototype-build, or other hands-on technical experience.
What Success Looks Like
Senior Design Engineers on this team wear many hats and become technical experts on PacSci EMC products. Success in this role requires curiosity, resilience, ownership, strong communication, and sound engineering judgment. The individual is expected to take an assignment, determine an effective path forward, and make meaningful progress with less frequent coaching than a developing engineer, while still seeking alignment when risk, complexity, or business impact requires it.
Career Growth
This role offers continued growth through broader technical ownership, deeper product expertise, New Product Development, Program Management, Quality Engineering, Test Engineering, and future engineering leadership opportunities.
Export Control
Due to U.S. Government contract requirements applicable to this position, only U.S. citizens are eligible for employment in this role.
