What is a design associate?

Design Associates are entry- to mid-level professionals who support design teams in creating visual concepts, layouts, and presentations for projects across industries such as graphic design, interior design, fashion, and architecture. They assist senior designers by conducting research, preparing materials, and using design software to bring creative ideas to life. Design Associates often collaborate with clients and other team members to ensure that the final product aligns with project goals and brand standards.

What are some common challenges design associates face when working on multiple projects simultaneously?

Design Associates often juggle several projects at once, which can make managing deadlines and shifting priorities a challenge. Effective communication with team members and clear organization of tasks are essential to ensure all projects move forward smoothly. Additionally, adapting quickly to feedback from clients or senior designers is key, as project requirements can change rapidly. Building strong time management skills and staying flexible will help you thrive in this fast-paced environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Associate, you need a solid understanding of design principles, proficiency in graphic design, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with industry-standard design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) is typically required. Strong communication, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate creatively are essential soft skills. These skills and qualities enable effective project execution, ensure design consistency, and foster successful teamwork in a fast-paced creative environment.

  • Develop strong concepts and execute high-level visual and motion design across various platforms and formats.

Job description

Gupta Media was founded over 25 years ago on the idea that advertising could create huge leverage in our clients' businesses. Our work initially focused on the entertainment industry, live events, and the recording industry (SXSW, Sony Music, Universal Music, and Disney Music Group are all clients). We have grown to partner with global brands (Amazon, Sophia Learning), major sports franchises (including X Games, Florida Panthers, Washington Commanders, Cleveland Cavaliers, Women’s Tennis Association), as well as public sector institutions (City of Boston, Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism), fintech, and media.

Gupta Media is looking for an exceptional Associate Design Director with deep expertise and strong creative instincts to turn ideas into standout work that connects with audiences everywhere: digital ads, billboards, web, video, print, social media, and wherever else our work takes us.

At its core, this is a hands-on design role. You love the craft, have a strong command of motion and visual design, and can take on our most ambitious and complex creative challenges. You develop strong concepts, execute at a high level, and set the bar for what great design looks like at Gupta Media.

You’ll also play an important leadership role. As our Associate Design Director, you’ll work closely with our Design Director to help build the capabilities of the team around you, providing creative direction and feedback, sharing expertise, and helping designers develop their skills. You’ll work directly with clients and integrated teams to bring clarity and confidence to the creative process.

What we are looking for:

  • Exceptional visual and motion design skills backed by 8+ years of agency or similar fast-paced creative experience, along with a portfolio that demonstrates a diverse mix of motion, visual storytelling, typography, composition, and craft;
  • Expert in Adobe Creative Cloud, particularly After Effects, setting the technical standard for the team, ensuring best practices on how the team approaches and executes creative work. Additional experience in Premiere Pro, Cinema 4D, and/or Blender a bonus;
  • The ability to lead a project from concept to execution, taking a strong core creative idea and translating it into a compelling motion design across a wide range of platforms, formats, screen sizes, and audience experiences.
  • Strong creative judgement and client-facing skills, with the ability to understand business goals, present creative concepts, incorporate feedback, and navigate different opinions with confidence;
  • A track record of raising the creative bar for other designers through a collaborative leadership style that builds trust, strengthens the team, and creates an environment where great work can happen.

To apply, please submit a resume, portfolio of relevant work, and a quick note on why you are the perfect candidate for Gupta Media.
