What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Dental Program Director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dental Program Director, you need a strong background in dentistry, academic administration, and program development, typically supported by a DDS/DMD degree and significant clinical or teaching experience. Familiarity with accreditation standards, curriculum management systems, and educational assessment tools is essential. One challenge is allocating time between administrative duties and direct involvement with faculty and students. Directors must also address evolving accreditation requirements and maintain high standards in both education and patient care. Successful directors regularly collaborate with faculty, clinicians, and administrative staff to create a cohesive learning environment while adapting to changes in dental education and practice.
