Job description

Summary
A well-established and growing construction firm in San Diego is seeking an experienced Director of Construction to lead and oversee all construction operations across a portfolio of multifamily and urban residential projects. This senior leadership role is responsible for driving project execution from pre-construction through close-out, while ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and budget objectives are consistently met. The ideal candidate is a strategic, hands-on leader with deep experience in multifamily construction, design-build environments, and managing complex projects in urban settings.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for construction operations, including project managers, superintendents, and field teams

  • Oversee all phases of multifamily and urban residential construction projects from pre-construction planning through completion and close-out

  • Develop and implement construction strategies, schedules, and workflows to support timely and cost-effective project delivery

  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with contract requirements, quality standards, and local building codes

  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership, architects, engineers, consultants, and subcontractors to ensure alignment across design and construction

  • Establish and manage project budgets, cost forecasts, and financial controls across multiple concurrent projects

  • Review project performance metrics and implement corrective actions to address schedule, cost, or quality risks

  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal safety regulations and promote a strong jobsite safety culture

  • Oversee quality control processes and conduct regular site reviews and inspections

  • Manage subcontractor selection, contract negotiations, and performance, with a focus on long-term partnerships

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for key stakeholders, inspectors, and permitting authorities

  • Provide regular reporting and executive-level updates on project status, risks, and opportunities

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field required

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive construction experience, including senior leadership or director-level roles

  • Proven experience leading multifamily, mixed-use, or urban residential construction projects

  • Strong understanding of design-build delivery methods and integrated project teams

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining schedule, budget, and quality standards

  • Deep knowledge of construction methods, sequencing, scheduling, budgeting, cost control, and risk management

  • Solid understanding of building codes, entitlement processes, and safety regulations, particularly in dense urban environments

  • Proficiency with construction management and scheduling software

  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills

  • Ability to operate strategically while remaining engaged in day-to-day operations

  • Professional certifications such as PMP or CCM are preferred
