Job description

Summary:

The sports reporter position at The Press Democrat produces stories on a variety of sports and sports-related topics, including in-person game coverage for high school, college, and occasional professional events; sports features, profiles and occasional first-person storytelling.

What you will do:

  • Produce sports journalism in print, digital and multimedia, on deadline, for The Press Democrat and its related publications

  • Travel 12-15 hours per week at heaviest times of sports seasons spent on in-person coverage at games, events and other assignments

  • Works with colleagues from the wider newsroom on in-depth/investigative stories that touch on sports

  • Use a variety of digital and social media tools to reach a wide and varied audience

What you will bring:

  • Knowledge and competency in understanding a variety of sports played at the high school, college and professional levels

  • Ability to write clearly and concisely in a variety of formats, on deadline for a daily publication

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • At least two years of experience as a fulltime or freelance sportswriter

Benefits and Compensation:

The hourly wage range is $26.33 - $35.20 + Cell stipend and mileage reimbursement. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, the Company offers eligible employees a variety of benefits including medical, dental, life and disability insurance, 401k, as well as paid time off and select paid holidays (all benefits are based on eligibility).
