Job description

Role: Operates delivery vans and a 5-ton truck with a tailgate, pickup and deliveries to various locations, far west as London, east to Port Hope, south to the lakefront and north to Orillia and everything in between. Will need to assist with unloading materials and supplies between various company facilities and work sites. Accountable for the safe and efficient operation of company vehicles. BFG truck driver is the primary function and forklift driver/warehouse person is secondary function.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain telephone contact with head office and be available to receive instructions to be dispatched to new locations. Follow a pre-determined schedule of pick-ups and deliveries.

  • Perform pre-trip inspection of vehicles, including tires, lights, brakes, emergency equipment, etc. Record inspection results daily in accordance with procedure and ensure inspection records always remain in the vehicle.

  • Comply with all applicable Highway Traffic Act requirements and other applicable transportation, traffic and safety regulations.

  • Maintain company vehicles in a clean, safe and orderly condition and notify the supervisor of any required repairs, maintenance, equipment or supplies.

  • Obtain client signatures and/or collect payment for goods delivered and applicable delivery charges, as required.

  • Comply with the organizations environmental, health & safety, recycling, sustainability efforts and quality assurance policies and standards.

  • Participate in company-sponsored training relating to material handling, safety and quality.

  • Provide professional and courteous customer service when interacting with clients, recognizing that you are representing BFG.

  • All property damage or accidents must be reported to your supervisor immediately.

  • Monitor road conditions, traffic, road closures and weather conditions while operating company vehicles, particularly during the winter months.

  • Use proper lifting techniques when loading and unloading the delivery vehicle.

  • Load vehicles in a safe manner, distribute your load equally and make sure your load is secure.

  • Perform any other warehouse duties as required.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum high school graduation

  • Minimum one to two years of experience as a delivery driver

  • Must have a valid and current Ontario Class A or D driver’s license in good standing; and able produce a clean Driver’s Abstract upon hire.

  • Valid Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration (CVOR)

  • Able to drive a cargo van and 5-ton truck with a tailgate.

  • Have strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and organize work.

  • Have excellent customer service and communication skills, and the ability to build collaborative relationships with clients and internal BFG staff.

  • Certified forklift license is preferred.

  • Previous warehouse experience in a fast-paced environment, including stock put-away, order picking and material handling

  • General knowledge of the roads and Highways in the GTA and southern Ontario.

Work Conditions and Physical Capabilities:
  • Perform varied tasks requiring independent knowledge, its application to a variety of situations, as well as exercise of independent judgement in addition to procedures and instructions provided.

  • Be able to lift and carry up to Up to 23 kg (50 lbs). This position may require performing physically demanding duties and/or grasping, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects, as well as to be able to stand, walk and bend.

  • Be able to drive for extended periods of time, up to 8 hours.

  • Be able to concentrate for long periods of time during all types of weather.
