Job description

The Ardsley School District is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable individual to serve as Varsity Girls Basketball Assistant Coach. This position is ideal for a coach who is passionate about teaching the game, supporting student-athlete development, and contributing to a unified and competitive basketball program.

The Assistant Coach plays a key role in supporting the Head Coach in all aspects of the program, including instruction, player development, and team culture. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to providing a positive and meaningful experience for student-athletes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, offensive/defensive concepts, and player development
  • Previous coaching or playing experience at the high school or collegiate level preferred
  • Ability to effectively teach, motivate, and connect with student-athletes
  • Willingness to learn and grow within an established program structure
  • Strong communication, organization, and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to sportsmanship and educational athletics
  • Interested candidates should possess or be willing to obtain the necessary coaching certification requirements from NYSED.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Varsity Girls Basketball Assistant Coach supports the Head Coach in implementing the vision and daily operations of the program. This includes assisting with practices, games, and player development while reinforcing team standards and expectations. The role requires flexibility, strong communication, and a team-first approach.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instruction & Player Development

  • Assist in planning and conducting practices focused on skill development, team concepts, and game preparation
  • Provide instruction for assigned position groups and support individual player development
  • Reinforce offensive and defensive systems established in collaboration with the Head Coach

Team Support & Supervision

  • Supervise student-athletes during practices, games, and team activities
  • Assist with game-day responsibilities including bench management, scouting support, and organization
  • Help maintain a structured, disciplined, and positive team environment

Program Alignment

  • Collaborate with the Head Coach and staff to ensure consistency in expectations and player development
  • Support alignment across all levels of the program when applicable

Student-Athlete Experience

  • Serve as a positive role model, promoting leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship
  • Support monitoring of student-athlete academic progress, attendance, and conduct

Operations & Compliance

  • Adhere to all district policies and regulations set by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA)
  • Follow all procedures related to injuries, medical protocols, and emergency situations

Communication

  • Maintain professional communication with coaching staff, student-athletes, and families as appropriate
  • Support the mission and initiatives of the athletic department
