Due to the nature of the industry, security clearances and adherence to classified information policies are often required.

What types of projects and technologies do defense software engineers typically work on?

Defense Software Engineers often work on projects involving the development and maintenance of software for military systems, such as radar, communications, simulation, or weapons control platforms. They frequently use technologies like embedded systems, secure coding practices, and specialized hardware interfaces. Project work can range from upgrading legacy systems to designing cutting-edge capabilities, often requiring adherence to rigorous security and compliance protocols. Collaboration with systems engineers, hardware teams, and government stakeholders is typical, offering a dynamic and mission-driven work environment. This exposure helps engineers build specialized expertise while contributing directly to national security initiatives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the defense software engineer position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Defense Software Engineer, you need expertise in software development, a strong grasp of cybersecurity principles, and familiarity with defense industry standards, typically demonstrated by a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Experience with programming languages such as C++, Java, or Python, knowledge of real-time operating systems, and certifications like Security+ or CISSP are often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams are valuable soft skills. These competencies ensure that complex, secure, and mission-critical software solutions are effectively developed and maintained to meet stringent defense requirements.

Job Title: Software Engineer – Embedded Systems

Job Description

This role focuses on designing and implementing embedded software solutions for complex, multi-network communication systems used in large-scale naval programs. You will contribute to software architecture, develop and debug near real-time embedded applications, and collaborate closely with systems and hardware engineering teams. The position offers the opportunity to work on advanced communication technologies within a mission-critical defense environment.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop embedded software solutions that meet performance, reliability, and real-time requirements.
  • Contribute to the definition and implementation of software architecture for complex embedded systems.
  • Develop software that operates reliably in complex, multi-network environments integrating various communication protocols.
  • Conduct independent research to identify and propose innovative solutions to technical challenges.
  • Collaborate closely with systems and hardware engineering teams to resolve technical issues and ensure seamless system integration.
  • Debug and troubleshoot embedded software issues in near real-time simulation environments.
  • Prepare and deliver clear presentations and demonstrations of software features, system behavior, and technical findings to internal stakeholders.
  • Ensure that implemented solutions align with project requirements, system constraints, and industry best practices.
  • Document designs, implementation details, and test results to support ongoing development and maintenance.

Essential Skills

  • At least 7 years of experience with modern C++ for embedded software development.
  • At least 7 years of experience with embedded Linux and real-time operating systems (RTOS).
  • Strong experience with networking protocols, including TCP/IP, SIP, RTP, and VOIP.
  • Proficiency in developing embedded software for complex, multi-network environments.
  • Hands-on experience debugging embedded systems and resolving near real-time software issues.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with systems and hardware engineering teams on technical topics.
  • Strong understanding of Linux-based embedded systems and associated development tools.
  • Experience with REST APIs in the context of embedded or networked systems.
  • Solid knowledge of embedded systems concepts, including real-time constraints, resource limitations, and hardware-software interaction.
  • Currently hold or are eligible to obtain Level II (Secret) Security Clearance.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with additional C++ libraries and frameworks for embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with PJSIP C/C++ libraries for SIP and VOIP applications.
  • Experience with TightVNC or similar remote desktop and visualization tools.
