The successful candidate will join a team of biologists conducting a variety of marine field sampling projects as part of the DEEP Marine Fisheries Program's efforts to monitor the fish and invertebrate populations of Long Island Sound. In the Departments of Energy and Environmental Protection and Agriculture this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in fisheries management, research and conservation.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of experience in marine and/or anadromous fisheries management.\r\nNOTE: Fisheries management is defined as work requiring a knowledge of scientific fields such as biology, ichthyology, fisheries science, fish population dynamics, aquatic ecology, limnology, fish taxonomy, fishery statistics, aquatic entomology, aquatic phycology and oceanography.\r\n
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
\r\n\r\n College training in fisheries management as defined in the note above may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.\r\n A Master's degree in fisheries management as defined in the note above may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.\r\n Successful completion of an Environmental Trainee program approved by the Department of Administrative Services may be substituted for the General Experience.\r\n\r\n\r\n
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
\r\n Experience planning, designing, and implementing fisheries-independent marine field surveys using bottom trawls.\r\n Experience applying standardized scientific protocols for biological and environmental sampling and species-level identification of marine and estuarine fish and invertebrates\r\n Experience processing and interpreting biological samples to determine fish life-history characteristics.\r\n Experience working aboard fisheries survey vessels during extended sampling days in rain, wind, heat, cold, and rough sea conditions.\r\n Experience managing fisheries data, conducting quality-assurance reviews, and performing statistical analyses using spreadsheets, databases, statistical software, or programming languages.\r\n Experience preparing technical reports, scientific presentations, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and grant proposals.\r\n Experience communicating scientific findings to fisheries-management organizations, scientific audiences, stakeholders, and the public.\r\n Experience using geographic information system software to manage, analyze, and visualize fisheries and other geospatial data.\r\n\r\n
