What does a deep learning research intern do?

A Deep Learning Research Intern assists in the development and experimentation of machine learning models, particularly neural networks, to solve complex problems in fields like computer vision, natural language processing, or robotics. They typically work under the guidance of experienced researchers, contributing to tasks such as data preprocessing, model training, and result analysis. Interns may also help implement and optimize algorithms, read and summarize research papers, and prepare reports or presentations on their findings. This role provides hands-on experience with state-of-the-art AI technologies and research methodologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deep learning research intern?

To thrive as a Deep Learning Research Intern, you need a strong grasp of machine learning fundamentals, programming skills (especially in Python), and a background in mathematics or computer science, often supported by relevant coursework or research experience. Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch and proficiency in using data processing and visualization tools are typically expected. Creativity, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help interns contribute novel ideas and collaborate within research teams. These skills are vital for developing, testing, and presenting cutting-edge AI models and solutions in a fast-evolving field.

What are some common challenges faced by deep learning research interns, and how can they overcome them?

Deep Learning Research Interns often encounter challenges such as managing complex datasets, tuning neural network architectures, and keeping up with the latest research developments. It's common to spend significant time troubleshooting code or optimizing models for better performance. Collaborating closely with mentors and team members, actively participating in research discussions, and consistently reading recent papers can help interns overcome these hurdles. Utilizing open-source tools and frameworks, along with clear documentation practices, also streamlines the research process.

Job description

Promise Robotics is pioneering Physical AI for homebuilding - a rapidly growing, venture-backed company bringing together AI, robotics, and manufacturing to help the homebuilding industry meet the growing demand for housing. Our robotic systems, built andย operatedย inside ย AI-powered factories, give the industry the production capacity, consistency, and speed to build more high-quality homes than traditional methods allow. Our team spans AI researchers and roboticists to factory operators, technicians, and production teams - allย buildingย the future ofย homebuildingย together.ย

We'reย buildingย physical AI for housingย - and unlike most of the field, our robots are already in production, fabricating real structures and generating real operational data every day across multiple factories.ย

We'reย looking for aย Seniorย Robotics Software Developer to join our team and contribute to developingย cutting-edgeย solutions for our core robotic manufacturing technologies.ย This is a senior IC role with architectural ownership and mentorship responsibility.ย

Why join us?
  • Purpose-Driven Work:Contribute to projects with significant social, economic, and environmental impact.ย

  • Growth Opportunities:Be part of a growth-stage startup with substantial upside and leadership potential.ย

  • Cutting-Edgeย Technology:Work onย state-of-the-artย robotics solutions at the intersection of construction and automation.ย

  • Collaborative Culture:Join a diverse, high-performing team committed to continuous learning and innovation.ย

What you'll do:
  • Lead theย development of roboticย simulatorsย ย -ย set up and extend simulation environments and test scenarios that mirror our production cells.ย

  • Lead theย effortย in motion planning and optimizationย - develop andย optimizeย motion-planning and collision-checking behaviors in ROS 2 / MoveIt2.ย

  • Developย perceptionย componentsย - implement object detection, pose estimation, and point-cloud processing tasks for material handling and inspection.ย

  • Write clean, tested codeย - produce well-documented C++ and Python, backed by unit and integration tests.ย ย

  • Debug integration issuesย - help troubleshoot software-hardware issues alongside the robotics and hardware teams.ย

  • Set the engineering bar -ย define standards for architecture, testing, and code quality; lead code reviews; mentor junior and mid-level developers.ย

What you'll need to succeed:
  • Degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechatronics, or related fields (Masters/Ph.D. preferred)ย plus 5+ yearsย of relevant robotics software experience.ย

  • Expert-level C++ and Python,ย withย a track recordย of shipping production-quality robotics software.ย

  • Strong fundamentals in algorithms, data structures, and basic control concepts.ย

  • Deep ROS 2 and MoveIt2 experience -ย motion planning, collision checking, and trajectory optimization (e.g., OMPL, CHOMP/STOMP/TrajOpt-style approaches).ย

  • Ability to solve complex problems involving multi-disciplinary engineering concepts.ย

  • Strong hands-on experience with aย robotics simulatorย (Gazebo, Isaac Sim,ย MuJoCo, or similar) including physics simulation.ย

  • Exposure to computer vision or perception concepts.ย ย

  • Eagerness to learn, take feedback, and work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced startup.ย ย

  • Willingness to work onsite at our R&D labs and production facilitiesย inย Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta.ย

Preferred Skills:ย

  • Experiential knowledge usingย Isaac Simย / Omniverseย orย similar simulation tools.ย ย

  • Applied or research experienceย withย vision-language-action (VLA) modelsย (e.g.,ย OpenVLA, 0, RT-2-style) orย LLM-based task and motion planning.ย ย

  • Industrial robot programming (KUKA, ABB, or Fanuc) and familiarity with vendor sensor/communication interfaces.ย ย

  • Sensor systems: industrial cameras, depth sensors, LiDAR, force/torque sensors, laser range finders/projectors.ย ย

  • Digital-twin technologies for validation and predictive maintenance.ย ย

  • Machine learning / deep learning applied to robotics.ย ย

  • Working knowledge ofย CSA Z434ย andย ISO 10218-2ย safety standards for industrial robot systems and cell integration.ย ย

  • Experience in a fast-paced startup or scaling deep-tech environment.ย
