Job description

Purpose

AET is a wholly owned subsidiary of leading international maritime conglomerate, MISC Berhad. Each LSV carries two mates. Both report to the Captain and perform responsibilities and duties as assigned. One mate acts as the safety advisor onboard the LSV and ensures that all company and regulatory requirements related to health, safety and the environment are met. It is the duty of this Mate to look for potential hazards and means of preventing incidents onboard the LSV. The other mate is responsible for the deck maintenance of the vessel.

Key Accountabilities 

  • The Mate is responsible for, stop work authority intervention, safety meetings, adherence to PPE, ensuring PTWS are followed and complete, marking of hazardous areas, first aid kit, spot checking of work being performed for compliance, housekeeping of vessel, safety inspection findings, safety data sheets and log upkeep, lashing equipment, shackles, straps, wire, paint locker store dates, vessel response plan, vessel general permit, routine maintenance on LSV equipment 
  • In the event that the Captain is indisposed, the Mate shall deputies for the Captain with legal powers of command until the Mate is relieved 
  • The Mate is responsible to the Captain for the effective administration and supervision of the following depending upon assigned role:  
    • Firefighting and damage control teams 
    • The work, duties and responsibilities of the deck ratings 
    • The efficient maintenance and upkeep of structure and accommodation of the vessel and ensuring these are kept in a smart, clean and sanitary condition including the allocation of cabins, in consultation with the Captain 
    • The efficient maintenance and upkeep of all mooring gear, including anchors and cables, mooring ropes and wires, chain and rope stoppers 
    • The efficient maintenance and upkeep of decks and piping 
    • The efficient maintenance and upkeep of all ship to ship/shore access equipment
    • The efficient maintenance and upkeep in a constant state of readiness of all lifesaving and firefighting appliances on deck and in the accommodation spaces 
    • The provision of safe moorings and gangways when alongside, moored to a buoy, or at anchor, together with gangway safety nets, and any appliances or equipment that are required by the custom of the port or by law for the safe and efficient working of the vessel  
    •  Proper storage and retrieval of the deck stores and spares. The requisitions shall be properly and accurately made out giving full details and dimensions, materials required, vendor, and other applicable items. Refer to Procurement Process (IMS-QMS-Section 8)  
    •  The upkeep and maintenance of the vessel Integrated management System
    •  Vessel stores inventory levels
    •  Vessels preventive maintenance system for deck
    • Other duties as assigned by the Captain
  • The Mate shall plan and supervise the work by the deck ratings bearing in mind at all times that safety and STS matters takes precedence over ordinary deck work 
  • Update the Planned Maintenance System (PMS) HELM. To maintain shipboard equipment, recommendations from the manufacturer manuals shall be adhered to  

Qualifications 

500t Mate Merchant mariner credential, TWIC, STCW BST: Basic Fire Fighting, STCW: Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities, STCW BST: First Aid/CPR, STCW BST: Personal Survival Techniques, GMDSS Operator, ARPA, Vessel Security Officer, Medical Care Provider, Advanced Fire Fighting, Leadership and Management, Bridge Resource Management, Radar, OMSA – SafeGulf, Lifeboatman 

Physical Requirements 

  •  Ability to continuously stand for long periods of time 
  •  Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, and lift frequently 
  •  Ability to lift up to 50 pounds or more frequently 
  •  Ability to work in an offshore environment and outside in temperatures up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit
