Job description

Job Title: Mechanical Technician

Work Year: 260 days 

Department: MSD Decatur Township Schools Operations

Reports To: Assistant Director of Facilities


SUMMARY: The Mechanical Technician will perform duties for Decatur Township throughout the assigned working location of MSD Decatur Township. The Mechanical Technician will be expected to install, operate and maintain the Districts electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. The Mechanical Technician is responsible for identifying repair and/or replacement needs, then completing installations and repairs. This position also conducts preventative maintenance and upgrades for building systems and equipment as needed. The Mechanical Technician assists other Maintenance Staff within and outside of their trade. This position reports directly to The Assistant Facilities Director. 


ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Complete job repair tickets daily.

2. Follow Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

3. Maintains vehicle, tools and equipment for the purpose of ensuring availability in safe operating condition.

4. Able to assist with other maintenance jobs in the district both general and mechanical maintenance.

5. Scheduled may shift as determined by facility need.

6. Troubleshoot to determine necessary repairs.

7. Plans repair work using buildings blueprints or equipment manuals as needed.

8. Orders supplies and materials needed for repairs and maintenance.

9. Performs general repairs that do not require specialized training. Examples may include repairing drywall,

painting, and repairing doors and other building fixtures.

10. Informs personnel regarding procedures and/or status of work orders for the purpose of providing information for making decisions, taking appropriate action and/or complying with building and safety regulations.

11. Maintains knowledge of District equipment procedures for power outages.

12. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns.

13. Makes emergency repairs in order to keep all systems functional and to provide a sanitary and safe environment for the children and faculty in the school’s system.

14. Must be willing to go on an on-call rotation.

15. Must be willing and able to plow snow when needed during the winter months.

16. All other duties as assigned by the Assistant Facilities Director.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Installs, inspects, maintains, repairs and performs routine/preventative maintenance on all electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems and their components for the purpose of evaluating condition, identifying necessary repairs and recommending preventive maintenance.


EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.  


EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 5 years of experience in Maintenance. Mechanical experience is preferred.


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EQUIPMENT; OTHER:

Solid foundational knowledge in plumbing, electrical, and HVAC

fields.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

HVAC certification preferred. 


PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

Must be able to lift 50 to 100 lbs. often and work on your feet for long periods of time without resting.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee may encounter while performing the essential functions of a Maintenance Technician for MSD of Decatur Township. This position works at Schools that require climbing up ladders and stairways. Must be able to work while standing, squatting and kneeling for long periods. This position also requires work outdoors in cold, hot and sometimes wet weather conditions.
