Decarbonization Engineer information

What does a decarbonization engineer do?

A Decarbonization Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing strategies to reduce carbon emissions in industrial processes, buildings, or energy systems. They assess current operations, identify opportunities for emission reductions, and develop technologies or processes that support the transition to cleaner energy sources. Their work often involves collaborating with other engineers, environmental experts, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability goals. Decarbonization Engineers play a crucial role in helping organizations achieve net-zero or low-carbon objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a decarbonization engineer?

To thrive as a Decarbonization Engineer, you need expertise in energy systems, carbon reduction strategies, and environmental engineering, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and experience in sustainability projects. Familiarity with emissions modeling software, life cycle assessment tools, and certifications like LEED or ISO 14001 are commonly required. Strong analytical thinking, project management, and stakeholder communication skills set outstanding professionals apart in this role. These capabilities are crucial for designing and implementing effective decarbonization solutions that meet regulatory standards and drive environmental impact.

How does a decarbonization engineer typically collaborate with other departments to implement sustainability initiatives?

Decarbonization Engineers work closely with cross-functional teams, including operations, facilities management, and sustainability departments, to design and execute projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions. They often facilitate workshops, analyze energy data, and provide technical guidance to ensure that emission-reduction strategies align with both regulatory requirements and organizational goals. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as these engineers translate complex technical solutions into actionable plans that other departments can implement effectively.

What is the difference between Decarbonization Engineer vs Sustainability Engineer?

AspectDecarbonization EngineerSustainability Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in engineering, environmental science, or related field; certifications in energy management or environmental standardsBachelor's in environmental engineering, sustainability, or related; certifications in LEED, sustainability management
Work EnvironmentIndustrial sites, energy plants, consulting firms focused on reducing carbon emissionsCorporate offices, consulting firms, NGOs working on broader sustainability initiatives
Industry UsagePrimarily in energy, manufacturing, and industrial sectorsAcross various sectors including corporate, government, and non-profit organizations

While both roles focus on environmental impact, Decarbonization Engineers specifically target reducing carbon emissions through technical solutions, whereas Sustainability Engineers adopt a broader approach to overall environmental and social sustainability strategies.

Seurat's proprietary Area Printing process, developed at Lawrence Livermore National Labs (LLNL), allows metal components to be manufactured at price points and quality levels that compete directly with conventional manufacturing techniques, enabling the reshoring of supply chains and promoting the decarbonization of industry. Seurat has raised over $180M and is backed by leading venture partners like Capricorn, NVentures (NVIDIA), True Ventures, General Motors Ventures, Denso, Porsche SE, SIP global partners, Honda, Xerox Ventures/Myriad Venture Partners, Cubit Capital, Siemens Energy, and Maniv Mobility.
Lead Manufacturing Integration Engineer
The Lead Manufacturing Integration Engineer owns the development and industrialization of advanced metal additively manufactured products. This role is responsible for guiding new products from concept through production release, collaborating across engineering, manufacturing, quality, and commercial teams to deliver innovative, manufacturable, and cost-effective solutions. This role is expected to work hands-on, lead cross-functional technical decisions, and create reusable standards that improve the speed and success of future launches.
New Product Development
  • Lead cross-functional development of new metal additive manufactured products from concept through production launch.
  • Evaluate customer requirements and convert them into manufacturable product designs.
  • Develop and execute product development plans, including design reviews, risk assessments, and validation activities.
  • Serve as the technical lead for new product introductions (NPI).
  • Develop and define the end-to-end machining, heat treatment, finishing, and inspection processes.
  • Establish manufacturing documentation including work instructions, SOP's, and process control plans.

Design Engineering
  • Create and optimize 3D CAD models and engineering drawings.
  • Apply Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) principles to maximize performance, manufacturability, and cost efficiency.
  • Design fixtures, tooling, supports, and secondary machining strategies.
  • Perform engineering analyses including tolerance stack-ups, thermal distortion evaluation, and structural assessments.
  • Participate in technical reviews, design discussions, and project planning meetings.

Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Collaborate with Quality Engineering to develop inspection strategies and validation plans.
  • Perform root cause analysis and corrective actions for manufacturing issues.
  • Drive continuous improvement using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Support qualification and certification activities for aerospace, medical, defense, or industrial applications.

Technology Development
  • Evaluate emerging additive manufacturing post-processing technologies, materials, and software.
  • Lead process development initiatives to improve part quality and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Support equipment selection, installation, and commissioning of new manufacturing systems.
  • Support quotation activities by estimating manufacturing costs and production timelines.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering best practices.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • 7-10+ years of engineering experience in manufacturing or product development.
  • 3+ years of experience with metal additive manufacturing technologies.
  • Strong understanding of DfAM principles.
  • Experience with CNC machining, tooling and fixture design, heat treatment, finishing, and secondary manufacturing processes.
  • Proficiency with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Netfabb, nTop, and Magics or comparable tools
  • Experience interpreting GD&T, engineering drawings and inspection results.
  • Strong technical leadership, project planning, communication, and hands-on problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Engineering or Materials Science.
  • Knowledge of titanium, stainless steel, nickel superalloys, aluminum, cobalt chrome, or tool steels.
  • Experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and topology optimization.
  • Experience with CAM programming, five-axis machining, wire EDM, CMM, CT scanning, metallography, and surface metrology.
  • Experience with FEA, topology optimization, thermal distortion prediction, or tolerance simulation.
