Job description

West Monroe is seeking a mission-driven Senior Consultant to join the Energy & Utilities team. In this role, you will directly contribute to the execution and management of decarbonization consulting projects that use building energy modeling, advanced analytics, and research that support energy efficiency, electrification, decarbonization, and the integration of renewables into the electric grid.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about delivering exceptional client service, dedicated to our mission of meeting state, federal, and international carbon mitigation goals, and enthusiastic about growing with our dynamic consulting firm.

Depending on experience, initial assignments may include advanced analytics to identify opportunities to improve alignment between demand-side programs and distribution planning needs and support long-term decarbonization goals and/or technical and project support for our role as technology and codes and standards experts in the California Market Transformation Administrator program.

Responsibilities 

  • Be a trusted advisor to our clients by providing pragmatic advice based on defensible data and analysis
  • Manage and contribute to multiple projects including technical research and analysis, client engagement, subcontractor management, and external stakeholder engagement including:  
    • Scoping and launching new projects
    • Engaging in primary and secondary research  
    • Procuring test equipment and arranging laboratory tests
    • Supporting laboratory and field investigations  
    • Fostering coalition-building  
    • Supporting legal, regulatory, and policy reviews 
  • Conduct building energy modeling to determine energy savings or operating characteristics of buildings, technologies, or competing technologies
  • Plan, scope, and oversee lab and field studies related to technologies or practices
  • Plan and conduct analysis of research results from laboratory tests, field studies, and/or building energy modeling
  • Develop and maintain budget forecasts and project schedules across multiple projects
  • Coordinate research with state programs and independent entities
  • Ensure high-quality deliverables, including spreadsheets with supporting calculations, memos, reports, and presentations 
  • Contribute to business development and proposal writing.
  • Leverage AI tools to accelerate analysis, synthesize complex information, and support data-driven recommendations for clients, exercising judgment in evaluating outputs.
  • Apply AI technologies (e.g., generative AI, automation tools, data models) to enhance insights, improve delivery efficiency, and elevate the quality of client outcomes.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or technical field(s) is required; bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering is preferred
  • 6+ years of relevant work experience, preferably including consulting and utility energy efficiency program exposure
  • Demonstrated experience with:
    • Energy modeling (EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, ModelKit, IESVE, TraneTrace, etc.) and engineering simulations
    • Python, R, or similar programming languages for data analysis
  • Comfort contributing to complex projects with a problem-solving orientation that prioritizes client needs.  
  • Strong attention to detail, including maintaining consistency and rigor across multi-section documents with multiple contributors
  • Proven project management experience with a successful track record.
  • Strong initiative, creativity, and curiosity; ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, including the ability to adapt technical material for broader audiences.
  • Confidence, enthusiasm, humility, and the highest ethical standards 
  • Desire to work in a remote environment with colleagues throughout the U.S. with primary alignment with West Coast hours. Flexibility to travel for in-person meetings, as needed
  • Experience integrating AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT) into day-to-day workflows to enhance productivity and insight generation, coupled with strong critical thinking to assess accuracy, mitigate bias, and ensure high-quality outputs. 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with one or more of the following 
  • Engineering support for energy efficiency programs such as technical reference manual (TRM) development or measurement and verification
  • California and national appliance standards and building energy codes, including California Title 20 appliance standards, California Title 24 building energy codes, ASHRAE 90.1, and IECC
  • Advanced data analytics including the application of machine learning or artificial intelligence to physics-based models related to energy efficiency, demand flexibility, or electrification
  • Utilities on demand side management (DSM) and/or advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) data analysis
