Job description

We’re seeking a compassionate and dependable Parent Support Worker to provide hands-on support to children and adolescents with serious emotional disturbances (SED) and their families. In this role, you’ll work directly with caregivers in their homes, schools, and communities—helping them build skills, navigate services, and create more stable, supportive environments.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide direct parent support services in home, school, and community settings
  • Coach and guide caregivers to better understand and respond to their child’s emotional and behavioral needs
  • Help families navigate the SED Waiver Program and available resources
  • Support crisis situations in collaboration with case managers and care teams
  • Facilitate parent support groups in Harvey, Marion, and McPherson counties
  • Assess family strengths and connect them with appropriate community supports
  • Collaborate with internal teams to support treatment goals and positive outcomes
  • Assist with respite care services as needed

What You Bring
  • Experience working with children, adolescents, or families (mental health or social services preferred)
  • Strong understanding of child/adolescent behavior and development
  • Ability to build trust while maintaining clear boundaries
  • Calm, steady approach in high-stress or crisis situations
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills

What Success Looks Like
  • Families feel supported, informed, and more confident in managing their child’s needs
  • Timely, accurate documentation of services (within 72 hours)
  • Active participation in team meetings and treatment planning
  • Meeting a 24-hour weekly billable service expectation
  • Minimum Education:   High school diploma, Bachelor’s degree or other approved work/personal experience in working with children
  • Minimum Experience:  Two years working with children, preferably experience including children with severe emotional disturbance and their families
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Must have good listening skills, verbal skills, and written communication skills
  • Must be able to observe patient demeanor and non-verbal communication for assessment purposes
  • Must be able and willing to work flexible hours and adjust work schedule to meet patient and organization needs
  • Must maintain State of Kansas Case Manager Certification and appropriate CEU’s where applicable
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with referral sources, external care providers, and mental health center team members (i.e. case managers, therapists, physicians, attendant care workers)
  • Must have ability to work effectively with children, adolescents, and their families
  • Must have ability to work effectively with families who have severely emotionally disturbed children and give appropriate support
  • Must have valid Kansas driver’s license.
  • Must be proficient at basic keyboarding/word-processing skills
  • Must be able to pass Kansas Bureau of Investigation Screen, Central Registry Screen, and DCF (Kansas Dept. for Children & Families, formerly SRS) background check
