Responsibilities
The DC Material Handler Lead helps management ensure smooth, safe, and efficient operations in assigned area(s) (i.e., shipping, receiving, etc.) within the distribution center (DC). The Lead has proven overall knowledge of our DC procedures, equipment, and systems across all areas of the DC through technical and on-the-job training and experience. Performs all work of a Material Handler at highest level of competency and efficiency, and assists management with key areas across the operations. Serves as Lead for other Material Handlers by training and providing support, guidance, and subject matter expertise.
  • Leads team members in assigned area(s), implementing processes and procedures; ensures smooth, safe, and efficient operations in that area; and applies subject matter expertise to solve problems.
  • Operates high-height and other power equipment (i.e. order picker and reach truck, capable of 25' reach) in a safe and efficient manner to pick and process orders and to locate, put away, stack, and move checked-in products to correct storage locations on a daily basis. This includes stocking, filling bin boxes, facing cartons, checking for product mixing, and rotating product where needed; monitoring stock on shelves or bins; replenishing stock from reserves; maintaining control of products in reserve stock area or will call area.
  • Receives product by unloading trucks using forklift, pallet jack, electric pallet jack, or by hand.
  • Ensures shipments received are in good condition and accurate by: inspecting freight for damage and signing freight bills; verifying quantity ordered versus quantity received; checking all shipments against packing lists; and completing necessary paperwork for reimbursements or discrepancies.
  • Ensures all required products have verified bar code labels and readable Johnstone stock numbers by scanning products, printing labels, resolving labeling discrepancies, and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Fills orders by picking products, packing items into cartons, stacking them in a manner that minimizes shipping damage, entering items into scan gun, and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Documents the shipment of hazardous materials by labeling cartons correctly and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Prepares orders by: preparing trucks for shipments; palletizing and wrapping orders; loading pallets and pieces into trucks; placing packing list in last skid; and completing necessary paperwork.
  • Maintains current accuracy and efficiency standards and follows standard operating procedures.
  • Coordinates as needed with other functional areas to encourage efficient flow of products throughout the distribution center.
  • Follows and models processes and procedures, answers questions, and provides general guidance for other Material Handlers.
  • Trains new employees on Material Handler duties, processes, procedures, and safety protocols.
  • Leads implementation of procedural changes and educates team members on such changes.
  • Assists in the maintenance and upkeep of all warehouse machinery and equipment.
  • Maintains a safe work environment by working in a safe manner, following safety rules, and maintaining a clean work area. Promptly reports any safety or maintenance concerns to supervisors.
  • Always wears protective equipment according to company policies and procedures. Accesses Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) as needed and when appropriate.
  • Maintains required hazardous materials, forklift, and other internal and external certifications as needed.
  • Maintains and models professional communications when interacting with customers and coworkers. Treats all customers and coworkers with a helpful and courteous attitude.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
  • Required:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); 3+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to train others.
  • Experience operating forklift and other warehouse equipment safely and competently.
  • Experience with inventory management systems.
  • Knowledge of HVAC wholesale industry, principles, and practices.
  • Previous experience with OSHA and safety regulations and procedures.

  • Preferred:
    • 1+ years of Johnstone Supply experience in distribution center operations at a Material Handler II or III level.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations:
  • Forklift certification required, or willingness to obtain on the job.

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to read, add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to work safely in all job tasks.
  • Skill in operation of power equipment, including forklift, electric pallet jacks, and cherry picker.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and maneuver large/heavy products or pieces of equipment while working within established safety guidelines.
  • Familiarity with distribution center management systems and order picking processes.
  • Ability to follow instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to attend to details.
  • Ability to get along with others in the workplace and resolve issues by working cooperatively and professionally with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Ability to work relatively unsupervised, completing daily tasks without instruction. Ability to identify and resolve problems within scope of responsibility without needing continuous direction.
  • Ability to complete routine paperwork.
  • Ability to efficiently utilize necessary technology to complete tasks, such as RF equipment and ERP software.
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations for safe equipment operations.
  • While multilingual skills are valued, English proficiency (written and spoken) is a core requirement for this position due to the nature of the work, safety regulations, and to ensure accurate communication and comprehension.

Physical Demand
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, and walk on a concrete floor for much of the workday. The employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to lift and carry and/or move up to 50 pounds and required to lift more weight with mechanical assistance or the assistance of team members. For driving duties (if applicable), employee is required to sit for long periods of time and can experience bouncing and vibration. The individual is frequently required to talk or hear. Special vision requirements are near vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and color vision.
