Introduction

The Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families (DVMF) was created by the State Legislature in 1999 as an executive agency with the mission of assisting veterans, active duty service members, their families and dependents, in securing benefits earned through military service.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nUnder the Department of Veterans and Military Families there are five major programs:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Service and Benefits Program\r\n Charlotte Hall Veterans Home\r\n Cemetery and Memorial Program\r\n Communications, Outreach, & Advocacy Program's\r\n Maryland Veterans Trust Fund\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe Department of Veterans and Military Families (DVMF) is seeking current qualified applicants for the position of Cemetery Grounds Supervisor.\r\n\r\n

POSITION DUTIES

Serve in a leadership role at a Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, where every burial honors the service and sacrifice of Maryland's veterans and their eligible family members.\r\n\r\n\r\nThis position supervises Veteran Cemetery Equipment Operators and Veteran Cemetery Caretakers in the daily operation, maintenance, and appearance of a Maryland State Veterans Cemetery. The incumbent provides leadership, training, and oversight to staff responsible for burial services, grounds maintenance, equipment operation, and perpetual care of the cemetery.\r\n\r\n\r\nKey responsibilities include:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n Supervising and directing cemetery maintenance staff in daily work assignments and safe operating practices.\r\n Coordinating and overseeing interment services to ensure every veteran and eligible dependent receives a dignified, respectful, and professionally executed burial.\r\n Operating and overseeing the use of heavy equipment, including backhoes, excavators, skid steers, and commercial mowing equipment used in cemetery operations.\r\n Maintaining cemetery grounds to the highest standards through landscaping, turf management, and preventative maintenance.\r\n Ensuring compliance with safety standards, environmental regulations, and agency policies.\r\n Supporting the mission of the Maryland Department of Veterans and Military Families by preserving a respectful, beautiful, and well-maintained final resting place for Maryland's veterans and their families.\r\n\r\n\r\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Five years of experience in grounds keeping or buildings and grounds maintenance work.\r\n\r\n\r\nNote: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in general maintenance classifications or cemetery caretaking specialty codes in the general maintenance field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.\r\n\r\n

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following preferred qualification(s). Include clear and specific information on your application regarding the qualifications.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe ideal candidate will posses the following:\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n One year of supervisory experience in Maryland State government.\r\n Experience leading cemetery operations or supervising grounds maintenance personnel.\r\n Experience working in a veterans, municipal, private, or national cemetery.\r\n Experience coordinating burial preparation, interment services, and perpetual care activities.\r\n Experience operating and maintaining cemetery and landscaping equipment.\r\n Experience applying fertilizers and pesticides in accordance with applicable regulations.\r\n Experience maintaining and repairing manual and powered grounds maintenance equipment.\r\n Commitment to providing compassionate customer service while supporting veterans' families during funeral and interment services.\r\n\r\n\r\n

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.\r\n

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

\r\n1. Employees in this classification may be subject to call-in 24 hours a day and may be required to provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Employees in this classification may be required to apply and store pesticides. Such employees shall use or apply pesticides in compliance with Maryland State pesticide regulations and licensing requirements.\r\n \r\n\r\n
