Job description

Leading design-build general contractor, located in north Columbus, is seeking an experienced Construction Estimator within the industrial market. Apply now for this great opportunity!
Eligibility to work in the United States required including a valid driver’s license. Sponsorship unavailable.
Job Title: Construction Estimator
Salary: $64,000+ and up to $100,000 for senior level. 
Day shift: 8:30am-5:00pm, Monday-Friday with some overtime if needed.
Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, up to 3% retirement contribution, vacation and sick time.
Summary
Under supervision of the Senior Estimator, Preconstruction Manager or General Manager, Construction Estimator performs estimation for design, engineering, and construction as a member of design-builder’s preconstruction team. Works closely with internal and external design and engineering teams from early stage of design development to the completion of the projects.

Responsibilities
The following is a list of representative duties. Other duties may be assigned that may reasonably follow and relate to essential tasks.

  • Accurately reads blueprints, specifications and the other technical documents, and understands the scope of work for preparing bid documents, correspondence, and estimate.
  • Stays up to date with safety codes and improvements in constructions.
  • Navigates and understands building codes and other site-related codes and regulations.
  • Prepares preliminary budget forecasts on schematic or progress designs for preconstruction design teams.
  • Works closely with architects and other internal and external professionals throughout the projects.
  • Maintains an up-to-date file or library of bids, engineering firms, trade contractors/suppliers, material and equipment brochures and catalogues.
  • Coordinates and conducts contractor pre-bid meetings onsite or online.
  • Keeps close communications with key contractors/bidders during bids and constructions.
  • Prepares bid documents for construction projects with preconstruction design team and external engineers.
  • Evaluates offers to purchase by site requirements, additions, and costing changes.
  • Resolves cost differences by analyzing and collecting information.
  • Stays being watchful for possible value engineering and cost saving options.
  • Writes up and presents budgets, reports, and project plans for supervisors’ reviews.
  • Schedules meetings with clients, site managers and staff as required.
  • Processes paperwork and travels to building sites as required.
  • Monitors construction processes.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to navigate specifications and plans with through knowledges
  • Proficiency in demonstrating proposals and projects
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments at once
  • Knowledge of the latest building codes and site-related codes and regulations
  • Close attention to detail
  • Strong and effective negotiation skills, both verbally and written
  • Reading ability to understand information contained in memoranda, reports and bulletins, etc., effectively
  • Ability to operate computer and other business machines with speed and accuracy
  • Math skills including algebra, geometry, and basic arithmetic needed to prepare takeoffs, estimates, and cost analysis
  • Strong time management skill, communication skills, both written and verbal, and interpersonal skills

Environmental and Physical Demands of the Position

  • Typical office, industrial operation or construction site environment
  • Physically fit to walk in the construction site from one end to the other, ability to obtain information needed for estimation
  • Bending/twisting and reaching
  • Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches or less
  • Lifting and carrying 50 pounds or less
  • Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, and stooping
  • Talking and hearing; use of the phone
  • Hold a valid US driver’s license

Education and Experience

  • A bachelor’s degree in architecture, construction or a similar field from an accredited college or university, or;
  • Minimum of 3-7 years of construction estimation with any combination of education and provides the necessary knowledge and skills.
