Key Responsibilities

1.

Coordinates daily unit operations to support safe, efficient, and high‑quality patient care. The Charge Nurse leads shift huddles and ensures effective handoff and change‑of‑shift communication. They coordinate staffing, patient assignments, admissions, discharges, and transfers, and proactively address issues that may compromise patient safety or care delivery.

Collaborates closely with interdisciplinary team members to support comprehensive patient care. They provide leadership during emergency situations, including directing or assisting with code responses and ensuring post‑event debriefings are completed.

Demonstrates strong communication skills, promotes teamwork, and maintains open communication between staff and leadership. They communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and other healthcare partners to enhance patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Supports continuous quality improvement through participation in audits and performance initiatives. They promote awareness and education related to policy and procedure updates, recommend opportunities for improvement, participate in shared governance, and escalate staff concerns to nursing leadership as appropriate.

Ranken Jordan is dedicated to delivering services to patients with complex medical needs, including infants, children, and adolescents.

Education and Experience Required:

The Charge Nurse will preferably have three years of nursing experience and a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Missouri. In addition, the Charge Nurse must have a current Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association and current PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification. 

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities

Knowledge

  • Comprehensive knowledge of pediatric nursing principles, including growth and development and family‑centered care for infants, children, and adolescents with complex and chronic medical conditions.
  • Advanced understanding of common and rare pediatric diagnoses, comorbidities, and medically fragile conditions, including care of technology‑dependent patients (e.g., tracheostomies, ventilators, feeding tubes, and central venous access devices).

Clinical Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct comprehensive, accurate, and ongoing pediatric nursing assessments, with the ability to recognize subtle changes in physiological, developmental, and psychosocial status.
  • Strong critical‑thinking and clinical‑judgment skills to differentiate baseline conditions from acute changes and implement appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Proficiency in the safe management, monitoring, and troubleshooting of complex medical equipment and therapies utilized in pediatric complex care settings.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and deliver safe, efficient, and developmentally appropriate nursing care in a fast‑paced, high‑acuity environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to emergent situations, maintaining clinical competence and decisiveness during high‑stress events.
