ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England's ongoing transition to clean energy.
Have you heard about ISO New England's Advanced Technology Solutions (ATS) group - the R&D engine driving innovation across the region's power grid and the industry? If you're passionate about research and solving real-world power system challenges to make a tangible impact, this is your opportunity. As part of the Emerging Technologies team within ATS, you'll analyze critical issues, identify new opportunities, design and implement advanced technical solutions to strengthen the reliability, resiliency, and efficiency of the New England power grid. Our current expertise spans IBR/EMT modeling and simulation, Synchrophasor/PMU analytics, ML/AI applications, and probabilistic/risk analysis. We're looking for another talent with a strong foundation in power system stability and control with forward-looking experience in IBR/EMT technologies.
What we offer you:
  • Hybrid work environment - 3 days/week onsite
  • Distance-based relocation assistance available
  • Competitive compensation with a base salary + performance bonus
  • Robust benefits package, including:
    • Enhanced 401(k) and financial planning support
    • Tuition reimbursement and professional development
    • Wellness programs, including an onsite gym
    • Free coffee at our onsite café
    • Flexible work hours
    • Employee Business Networks
  • A stable, mission-driven workplace where your impact truly matters

How you will make an Impact
  • Production Support: Enhance operations and planning software solutions to address current and evolving needs.
  • Renewable Integration: Evaluate current study tools and procedures, identify gaps, develop technology roadmaps and solutions to enable the reliable integration of renewable and inverter-based resources.
  • EMT Modeling and Studies: Provide comprehensive solutions to address ISO's evolving EMT modeling and study needs.
  • Internal Consulting: Analyze, design, prototype and recommend innovative engineering and software solutions to complex technical challenges for ISO business units including Planning, Operations, and IT.
  • External Collaboration: Partner with leading research institutions and industry groups (EPRI, PSERC, CURENT, DOE National Labs, software vendors) to advance state-of-the-art technologies.
  • Technology Exploration and Use Case Development: Stay abreast of emerging technologies, collaborate with business users to identify and define compelling use cases, and prototype innovative solutions for evolving system challenges.

What we are looking for
  • PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, with a focus on power system stability and control.
  • Strong background in power system modeling, simulation, and analysis, including experience with IBRs in both phasor and EMT domains.
  • Advanced user of commercial tools such as PSS/E, PSCAD, DSATools, PowerWorld, etc.
  • Hands-on software development experience in Python, Matlab, C#, Java, etc.
  • Good analytical, communication and presentation skills.
  • At least five years of experience is required for the Senior level, and eight years of experience is required for the Lead level.

The expected salary range for this position is $123,000 - $168,000 per year. This role is also eligible for an annual performance bonus, comprehensive health insurance (medical, dental and vision), flexible spending and health savings accounts, a 401(k) plan with generous employer contributions and a student debt benefit, life and AD&D insurance, disability insurance, critical illness and hospital indemnity benefits, paid time off, paid leave, a wellness program, an employee assistance program and other great company perks.
