Job description

An exciting career awaits you
At MPC, we're committed to being a great place to work - one that welcomes new ideas, encourages diverse perspectives, develops our people, and fosters a collaborative team environment.
This Senior Fundamental Trading Analyst supports MPC's Global Supply Trading and Origination organization by delivering high-impact crude and heavy products market analytics that directly inform trading, origination, and planning decisions. The role owns end-to-end crude and heavy products fundamental analysis, including global supply-demand balances, flow dynamics, and quality economics, and translates complex market signals into timely, actionable insights embedded within commercial workflows. The role also supports enterprise fundamental analytics strategy by helping standardize balance construction, market data governance, and scalable analytical methodologies across crude and heavy products.
This position is designed as a key analytics role with direct proximity to trading activity, requiring strong commercial judgment, analytical ownership, and close collaboration with traders, schedulers, and origination teams.
Primary Objectives
  • Provide decision-grade crude and heavy products market analytics that directly support trading, origination, and supply optimization

  • Own and continuously enhance crude, differential, and quality datasets to ensure analytical integrity and commercial relevance

  • Partner closely with traders, schedulers, and origination teams to integrate analytics into day-to-day execution and strategic positioning

  • Build deep expertise in global crude fundamentals, refinery economics, and structural market drivers

  • Collaborate with quantitative analytics and other commodity trading analysts to enhance market insights, apply advanced analytical techniques, and establish consistent commercial analytics best practices

  • Establish and maintain consistent crude and heavy products balance methodology, data standards, and model governance practices across analyst workflows

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain global crude and heavy products supply-demand and balance models, monitoring production, refining demand, inventory trends, and global crude and heavy products flows

  • Analyze differentials, quality impacts, and arbitrage opportunities, providing proactive ad-hoc analytics based on current market dynamics

  • Deliver timely insights and market intelligence to trading, scheduling, and origination teams to support commercial decision-making

  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity across market databases, models, and reporting outputs

  • Support the development and governance of centralized gold data standards for crude and heavy products fundamentals, improving transparency, consistency, and reliability across models and reporting.

  • Coordinate with Commercial Analytics, trading, technology, and data teams to translate business requirements into scalable balance models, data pipelines, and analytical tools.

  • Drive continuous improvement in balance construction, data quality controls, model documentation, and repeatable analytical workflows.

  • Provide regular market updates and forward-looking analysis highlighting risks, opportunities, and structural shifts

  • Support Supply Trading and Origination in identifying new commercial opportunities and evolving market dislocations

  • Translate complex market dynamics into actionable strategies using modeling, visualization, and analytical tools

  • Distill complex analysis into clear, concise insights and communicate effectively with commercial and cross-functional partners

Role Scope and Development
This role is designed as a key development position within Supply Trading and Origination Analytics. The analyst will work in close partnership with traders and commercial leadership, gaining direct exposure to trading decisions, market structure, risk themes, and the analytical workflows that support commercial execution. Through day-to-day collaboration and periodic trading coverage responsibilities, the analyst will build practical commercial judgment and execution experience alongside core analytical ownership.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Marketing, Economics, Engineering, Marine or related discipline required.

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in Commercial, Risk, Trading Analytics, Marine, Scheduling, or Marketing required.

  • Experience in crude oil trading analytics, physical commodity markets, supply optimization, refinery economics, or related commercial analytics roles

Preferred Experience:
  • Working knowledge of commodity supply and demand fundamentals, including production, refining, inventories, and global flows

  • Experience analyzing commodity differentials, quality impacts, and regional pricing benchmarks

  • Advanced Excel skills for analytical modeling and scenario analysis

  • Familiarity with data visualization or analytics tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or similar platforms

  • Working knowledge of SQL, Python, or comparable tools used for data analysis

  • Experience developing or governing commodity balance models, market data standards, analytical methodologies, or enterprise-scale commercial analytics workflows.
