Job description

Requisition SS-2025-0147

The Role

SplitStep is seeking a software engineer to build client applications using AI coding agents.

This is hands-on full-stack development using Claude Code, Cursor, and other AI coding tools. You will write code, review code, and ship it. This is not a prompting, no-code, data science, or machine-learning research position.

Prior experience with these tools is expected. Candidates should arrive comfortable working with Claude Code or Cursor and able to discuss how they get reliable results from them. Codex, Copilot, and comparable tools are welcome additional background. This is central to how we work and is not something you will learn here from scratch.

We hire for aptitude and demonstrated work, not a years-of-experience checklist. A solid programming foundation, fluency with AI coding agents, and a portfolio of completed projects are the primary criteria. New graduates and career changers with work they can show are welcome to apply.

What You'll Do

  • Build features across the stack — interfaces, application logic, APIs, and database work — with code review and guidance from the founder.
  • Apply AI coding agents to production code as part of the daily development workflow.
  • Review AI-generated output for correctness, security, and maintainability before it reaches production. Learn to tell the difference between code that looks right and code that is right.
  • Work in Git and GitHub — branches, pull requests, code review — as normal daily practice.
  • Write clear documentation that keeps projects understandable as they grow.
  • Participate in client requirements discussions and translate business needs into working software.
  • Communicate clearly about what you are working on, what is blocking you, and when you need help. Asking early is a strength here, not a weakness.

Technologies You'll Work With

Core: C#, Python, JavaScript, SQL

Databases: SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB

Cloud: Azure, AWS

AI tooling: Claude Code, Cursor, OpenAI Codex, model APIs

Workflow: Git, GitHub, CI/CD, automated testing

Familiarity with all of this is not expected. Strength in the core languages plus the capacity to learn the rest on the job is the standard.

What You Need

  • Hands-on experience with Claude Code and/or Cursor. This is a required qualification. Experience with Codex, Copilot, and comparable tools is valued as additional background.
  • A project built with these tools that you can present and discuss, including your development process and the issues you identified and resolved.
  • A working foundation in at least one of C#, Python, or JavaScript. Depth in one matters more than surface familiarity with several.
  • Basic SQL and an understanding of relational databases.
  • Familiarity with Git and version control fundamentals.
  • Evidence that you build things: a CS or related degree, a coding bootcamp, professional experience, or demonstrable self-taught project work.
  • Responsiveness to code review feedback and clear communication when requirements are unclear.

Nice to Have

  • Internship, freelance, or professional software development experience.
  • Exposure to web APIs, front-end frameworks, or cloud platforms.
  • Experience across multiple AI coding tools.
  • Exposure to AI agents, tool-calling workflows, or MCP servers.
  • Interest in industrial, manufacturing, aviation, supply chain, inventory management, or procurement software.

What This Role Offers

  • Daily code review and technical guidance from the founder.
  • Work on production client software across the full stack, starting in your first weeks.
  • AI coding agents used on real client work, not restricted to side projects.
  • Expanding scope and responsibility as the firm grows.

What to Expect from an Early-Stage Firm

SplitStep is a young company with a small team. That means real ownership and direct access to the founder from your first month. It also means priorities shift, processes are still being written, and some days you will be figuring out the answer rather than looking it up. If ambiguity and breadth sound energizing, you will do well here. If you are looking for a highly structured new-grad program with a fixed curriculum, this is probably not the right fit.

Compensation and Benefits

$70,000 – $90,000 per year, depending on experience, with room to grow quickly as the business grows. Full-time, salaried, benefits-eligible.

SplitStep offers a competitive benefits package, with specifics discussed during the interview process.

SplitStep funds an AI tooling and learning budget: subscriptions to Claude Code, Cursor, and comparable platforms, model API credits, and an annual allowance for conferences and training.

Location

Full-time, primarily remote. Houston, Texas area preferred; other Texas locations secondary. Candidates anywhere in the United States will be considered. Occasional travel to the SplitStep office or client sites. Must be authorized to work in the United States.

How to Apply

Email your resume to jobs@splitstep.com with Software Engineer — SS-2025-0147 in the subject line. Applications submitted through LinkedIn are also accepted.

Tell us how you currently use AI coding tools — which tools, on what kind of project, and what you have learned about getting good results from them. Links to things you have built are always welcome. A cover letter is not required.
