This Opportunity
WSP is seeking a Senior System Planning Advisor to join our System Planning & Resiliency group within the Energy Advisory Services (EAS) business unit. This role focuses on Advisory services associated with system planning, transmission planning, data center integration, and integrating new infrastructure into the power system. This includes both traditional AC solutions along with technologies such as HVDC, FACTS, and GETS.
The evolution of the grid is complex and requires staff/experience with thorough understanding of large load integration, interconnection process, regulatory compliance/policies, and regional and interregional power capacity.
The advisor combines deep expertise in power systems engineering with strong client-facing consulting, project leadership, and business advisory capabilities to help organizations navigate the evolving energy landscape
This role serves utility executives, transmission planning leaders, regulators, system operators, developers, and investors, helping shape the future of reliable, resilient, and sustainable electric power systems.
This is a REMOTE position supporting system planning and grid-modernization initiatives across the U.S. and internationally.
Your Impact
  • Power System Planning
    • Lead transmission and power system planning studies, including:
      • Load flow analysis, Contingency analysis, Short-circuit studies, Stability and dynamic performance assessments, Voltage and reactive power analysis
    • Assess system reliability and compliance with NERC, FERC, and regional reliability standards.
    • Identify transmission constraints and recommend system improvement solutions.
    • Evaluate transmission expansion, grid modernization, and resilience initiatives.
    • Support integration of renewable generation, battery energy storage systems (BESS), distributed energy resources (DERs), and emerging technologies.
  • Strategic Advisory
    • Advise utility and energy-sector clients on long-term planning strategies.
    • Develop transmission and power system roadmaps aligned with electrification, decarbonization, and load growth objectives.
    • Support capital investment planning and infrastructure prioritization.
    • Assess regulatory, operational, and market impacts of proposed projects and programs.
  • Regulatory & Market Support
    • Provide technical support for regulatory filings and proceedings.
    • Analyze transmission planning requirements across ERCOT, SPP, MISO, PJM, CAISO, NYISO, ISO-NE, and other jurisdictions.
    • Support resource adequacy, interconnection, and system expansion planning activities.
    • Develop technical reports, business cases, and executive-level recommendations.
  • Business Development and Thought Leadership
    • Build and maintain relationships with utility executives and industry stakeholders.
    • Support proposal development, sales pursuits, and account growth activities.
    • Contribute to industry conferences, publications, and thought leadership initiatives.
    • Identify emerging trends in grid transformation, resilience, and energy transition.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 10+ years of experience in power system planning, transmission planning, utility operations, energy consulting, or related fields.
  • Demonstrated leadership of planning studies and client-facing engagements.
  • Experience working with electric utilities, transmission operators, ISOs/RTOs, or energy developers.
  • Strong knowledge of power system planning, transmission systems, and grid operations.
  • Experience with industry tools such as: PSS®E, PSLF, PowerWorld, ASPEN, CAPE, TSAT
  • Understanding or familiarity of: NERC Reliability Standards, FERC regulations, Integrated Resource Planning (IRP), Transmission expansion planning, Renewable integration studies, Grid modernization and resilience initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Energy Systems preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • Experience in ERCOT, SPP, MISO, PJM, or other regional planning organizations.
  • Knowledge of transmission economics, production cost modeling, and cost allocation methodologies.
  • Experience with industry tools such as: PROMOD, PLEXOS, GridView, Uplan
  • Experience supporting energy transition and grid resilience programs.

Compensation:
Expected Salary (all locations): $127,600 - $227,500
