What is a day functional neurosurgeon?

A Day Functional Neurosurgeon is a medical doctor who specializes in performing neurosurgical procedures that aim to restore or improve neurological function, often in a day-surgery or minimally invasive setting. These surgeons treat conditions such as movement disorders (like Parkinson’s disease), epilepsy, chronic pain, and certain psychiatric conditions using techniques like deep brain stimulation and other functional neurosurgical interventions. The 'day' aspect often refers to the ability to perform some procedures in an outpatient or short-stay context, minimizing hospital time for patients. Their work combines advanced surgical skills with knowledge of brain function and neurological disorders.

To thrive as a Day Functional Neurosurgeon, you need an MD or DO degree, completion of a neurosurgery residency, and specialized training in functional and stereotactic neurosurgery.
