What is a day competitive programmer?

A Day Competitive Programmer is someone who regularly participates in competitive programming contests, often held online during the day. These programmers solve algorithmic and coding problems under timed conditions, honing their problem-solving and coding skills. They may compete individually or as part of a team, and often use languages like C++, Java, or Python. Competitive programming is popular among students, professionals, and coding enthusiasts who want to improve their logical thinking and prepare for technical job interviews.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a competitive programmer?

To thrive as a Competitive Programmer, you need strong problem-solving abilities, proficiency in algorithms and data structures, and often a background in computer science or related education. Familiarity with coding platforms like Codeforces, LeetCode, and HackerRank, as well as programming languages such as C++, Java, or Python, is essential. Quick thinking, perseverance, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills that help in tackling complex challenges under time constraints. These skills are vital for achieving top performance in competitions and for developing coding expertise applicable to software development roles.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals in a day-to-day competitive programming role?

Professionals in daily competitive programming roles often face tight deadlines to solve complex algorithmic problems, which requires both deep technical knowledge and strong time management skills. Staying current with evolving programming languages, data structures, and algorithms is essential, as is the ability to quickly adapt to different problem types. Collaboration with peers or participating in team-based contests can also be challenging, as it demands clear communication and the ability to integrate diverse problem-solving approaches. Regular practice, continuous learning, and participation in code reviews are key strategies to overcome these challenges and excel in this fast-paced environment.

CWILL

Cary, NC • Remote

Full-time

Retirement, PTO

Job description

About CWILL

CWILL (pronounced 'quill') is a post-purchase and retention suite built for Shopify brands. Reduce support tickets, recover lost revenue from returns, and turn one-time buyers into loyal fans — with tools purpose-built for every touchpoint that follows the sale.

About the Role

CWILL's engineering teams are building the next generation of SaaS products for Shopify brands — including AI-powered customer service tools and SEO optimization products. As our products grow, so does our need for strong engineering talent who can learn fast and ship real things.

Our R&D Management Trainee program is built for engineers who are new to the workforce but ready to dig in. You'll be embedded in a product engineering team, working on production systems from day one with mentorship from senior engineers. Over time, you'll grow into an engineer who can independently own modules and make technical decisions.

You'll be placed on one of our active product teams:

  • Order Tracking
  • Loyalty & Referrals
  • Pop-up & Email Marketing
  • AI Chat
  • SEO & Speed
What You'll Do

Customer Issue Support

  • Investigate and resolve technical issues raised through user and customer-support tickets, quickly identifying the root cause of front-end and back-end failures (data discrepancies, API errors, display issues, and similar).
  • Triage and prioritize incoming issues by severity; respond promptly to urgent cases, drive them through to a fix, and close the loop with the reporting team.
  • Document recurring issues — producing troubleshooting guides and FAQs — to reduce repeat tickets over time.
  • Work with the customer support and product teams to reproduce reported problems, and provide data corrections or interim workarounds where needed.

System Maintenance & Bug Fixes

  • Assist with production bug investigation, root cause analysis, and resolution
  • Use logging, monitoring, and database tools to trace issues methodically
  • Contribute to ongoing improvements in system stability, performance, and code maintainability

Engineering Collaboration & Growth

  • Follow team engineering standards: code reviews, documentation, and testing
  • Proactively communicate progress, risks, and blockers
  • Participate in post-launch retrospectives; continuously improve your code quality and engineering judgment
  • As you grow, take on increasing ownership of modules and technical decisions

Requirements

  • Recent graduate from a US university (BS or MS), or within 1–2 years of graduation
  • Proficiency in at least one backend language: JavaScript/TypeScript, Python, Java, Go, or PHP
  • Web fundamentals: HTTP, RESTful API design, frontend-backend interaction, and relational databases
  • Basic SQL and database understanding (MySQL or PostgreSQL)
  • Able to read documentation, debug systematically, and own your work through completion
  • Reliable and communicative — you surface problems early and follow through on commitments

Nice to Have

  • Experience with any of: React, Node.js, Next.js, NestJS, Python, PostgreSQL, Redis
  • AI/LLM project experience: prompt engineering, RAG, knowledge bases, chatbots, or content generation
  • Shopify app development, independent store tech, SEO tools, or SaaS product experience
  • Internship at a tech or SaaS company; open source contributions or personal project portfolio
  • Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD, or cloud services (AWS, Aliyun, etc.)
  • Active GitHub profile with consistent commit history
  • Competitive programming background (ACM, LanQiao Cup, etc.)
  • Experience with AI-assisted development tools (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, etc.)
  • Mandarin Chinese communication ability

Benefits

Starting Pay: 60 - 80k depends on experiences, open to negotiation

  • 401(k)
  • PTO
  • Paid Holidays
  • Insurance
