Job description

Tankerman

Under U.S. Coast Guard regulations, tankermen serve as the person-in-charge of the vessel for cargo transfer operations involving tank barges. Transfers involve all types of liquids including oils and refined products, chemicals, and liquified gases. Tankermen are fully responsible for the transfer including vessel mooring, pre-transfer inspection, opening and closing valves to safely move the cargo on or off the barge, completing required paperwork, and communicating with dock facility personnel. Tankermen work on 24-hour call and without direct supervision.

Applicants must hold licensing and documentation issued by the U.S. Coast Guard, and be able to demonstrate solid experience, integrity, a strong work ethic, a commitment to excellence, and the ability to sustain incident-free operations.

Job Requirements

Must hold current and valid:

  • U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Credential (MMC)
  • Coast Guard medical card
  • Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Driver's License

Reliable transportation, automotive insurance, and telephone

Ability to work on-call including days, nights, weekends, and holidays

One year of tankerman experience or more preferred

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform each essential duty satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Serve as the Person-In-Charge of the vessel, ensuring the safe transfer of products to and from vessels per USCG regulations and company / customer requirements
  • Travel to job locations within the time required
  • Transport, wear and use all required equipment necessary for safe job completion
  • Conduct pre-transfer risk assessments and develop cargo transfer plans
  • Conduct pre-transfer inspections per the Loadstar Barge Inspection Report
  • Communicate with Marine Logistics Coordinator and reports any irregularities, discrepancies, or unsafe conditions affecting the vessel or facility
  • Demonstrate the commitment to utilize Stop Work Authority if there is any uncertainty about whether it is safe to proceed
  • Regularly evaluate and modify cargo flow as needed throughout the transfer
  • Regularly inspect and adjust barge mooring lines throughout the cargo transfer to allow for changes in equipment draft or condition
  • Disconnect and secures the barge valves and openings to prepare barge for departure
Job Qualifications
  • 18 years or older
  • Legally able to work in the U.S.
  • Consistent work history with good references from past employers
  • Must complete pre-employment requirements including but not limited to a physical, drug and alcohol testing, and background check.
Physical Requirements
  • Speak, write, and read fluent English
  • Work outside in all types of conditions for extended periods
  • Pass a required medical examination
  • Properly wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Lift, carry, grip, hold, and/or pull up to 75 pounds
  • Walk one to six miles per job
  • Climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and/or ramps
  • Step as much as two feet horizontal and vertical and extend arms through normal range of motion while standing and squatting
