Dauphin information

What is a Dauphin?

A Dauphin was the title given to the heir apparent to the throne of France from 1350 to 1830. The title originated from the Dauphiné region, which was transferred to the French crown on the condition that the heir would be called 'Dauphin.' The Dauphin was typically the eldest son of the reigning king and had special privileges and duties, but did not rule independently. The title ceased to be used after the fall of the French monarchy.
