What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a datacenter engineer?

To thrive as a Datacenter Engineer, you need a strong understanding of server hardware, networking, power/cooling systems, and typically a degree in IT, computer science, or related field. Familiarity with data center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools, virtualization platforms like VMware, and relevant certifications such as CompTIA Server+ or Cisco CCNA are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These abilities ensure the reliability, efficiency, and security of data center operations, which are critical for organizational uptime and service delivery.

What is a datacenter engineer?

Datacenter Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot the physical and virtual infrastructure of data centers. Their responsibilities include managing servers, networking equipment, storage systems, and ensuring optimal power and cooling efficiency. They also monitor system performance, address hardware failures, and coordinate with other IT teams to support business operations. Datacenter Engineers play a crucial role in maintaining uptime, security, and scalability of the organization's critical IT assets.

What are some typical challenges datacenter engineers face when maintaining uptime and reliability?

Datacenter Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing unexpected hardware failures, coordinating timely maintenance without disrupting service, and ensuring robust network connectivity. They must also stay vigilant against security threats and environmental risks like power outages or overheating. Proactively monitoring systems, collaborating closely with IT and facilities teams, and following standardized protocols help address these challenges and ensure the datacenter remains operational and secure.

About this Role

We are seeking a Lead VMware/OS Engineer to drive large-scale datacenter migrations as part of our enterprise infrastructure modernization program. In this role, you will lead end-to-end VM migrations using VMware HCX, ensuring minimal downtime and seamless cutovers across Windows and Linux environments.

If you have deep VMware expertise, experience with PowerFlex storage, and a passion for executing complex migrations in regulated enterprise environments โ€“ we want to hear from you.

What You''''ll Do
  • Lead wave-based VM migrations using VMware HCX (Bulk/RAV)

  • Build and configure PowerFlex Grid using deployment and implementation tools

  • Perform pre-migration checks (snapshots, VMware Tools, disk layouts, connectivity)

  • Execute batch cutovers during approved maintenance windows

  • Validate post-migration OS boot, DNS/NTP/LDAP, and application connectivity

  • Decommission source VMs and remediate orphaned VMDKs

  • Coordinate with CAB, Infrastructure, and Application teams

  • Maintain migration dashboards, KPIs, and wave completion reporting

What You Bring
  • 7+ years hands-on VMware infrastructure and migration experience

  • Strong expertise in vSphere, ESXi, vCenter, and HCX

  • Proven experience migrating Windows & Linux VMs across datacenters

  • Working knowledge of PowerFlex (or similar enterprise storage platforms)

  • Solid understanding of networking (VLANs, DNS, IP changes, firewalls)

  • Experience in change-controlled enterprise environments with CAB

  • VMware certifications (VCP) and PowerCLI/scripting are a plus
