Job description

Jr. Data Engineer

Location: Birmingham, AL (onsite 3-4x a week)

Duration: 1-2 year contract with potential to convert full time

Rate: $55-60hr. on w2

Authorization: Candidates must be able to work directly on w2 without requiring sponsorship now or in the future

Role Overview

We are seeking a Jr. Data Engineer to join our team. This role involves working in a regulated, production-critical enterprise environment. The position requires close collaboration with business stakeholders, strong delivery capabilities, and the ability to translate technical requirements into understandable terms. The ideal candidate will have experience in consulting or similar environments, bringing diverse perspectives to solve challenges.

Key Responsibilities
  • Build, operate, and optimize batch and/or streaming data pipelines.
  • Develop data models, including star schemas.
  • Transform raw data into curated, reusable datasets for analysis.
  • Work with relational databases, data lakes, and NoSQL systems.
  • Support analytics and reporting, primarily through Power BI.
  • Utilize AI tools or copilots to assist with data engineering tasks such as SQL development, pipeline generation, testing, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineers and managers within the electric utility and operations domain.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience: 5+ years of experience in a data engineering or software engineering role is required. Experience must include working in enterprise environments with a mix of on-premise and cloud technologies.
  • Technical Skills: 1+ years of Databricks engineering experience (Open to new grads with STEM degree).
  • Strong SQL and Python development skills.
  • Hands‑on experience with SQL Server.
  • Experience building and maintaining ETL pipelines using SSIS or similar tools.
  • Experience with Spark-based platforms, with Databricks Lakehouse as the primary future-state technology.
  • Familiarity with orchestration tools such as Airflow or an equivalent.
  • Experience with CI/CD and Git-based workflows for data pipelines.
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to operate effectively in a regulated, production-critical environment.
