What does a database developer contract do?

A Database Developer on a contract basis is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining databases for organizations during a specified project or time period. They create and optimize database structures, write and test queries, and ensure data integrity and security. Contract Database Developers work independently or as part of a team to deliver solutions that meet client requirements, often focusing on tasks like performance tuning, troubleshooting, and implementing new features. Their role is project-based, so they may work with multiple clients over time.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a database developer contract?

A Database Developer Contractor needs strong SQL programming skills, experience with database design, and a solid understanding of relational and non-relational database systems, typically supported by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with tools like Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, and knowledge of ETL processes, as well as certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, are commonly required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with clients and teams. These competencies are crucial for delivering scalable, secure, and efficient database solutions on time and within project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced by database developer contracts?

Database Developers on contract often encounter challenges such as quickly adapting to unfamiliar database environments, integrating with existing teams, and understanding legacy systems. Since contract roles typically have tight deadlines, contractors must rapidly assess project requirements and deliver solutions efficiently. Additionally, clear communication with stakeholders and in-house developers is essential to ensure alignment on database design, security standards, and performance expectations.

What is the difference between Database Developer Contract vs Database Administrator?

AspectDatabase Developer ContractDatabase Administrator
CredentialsTypically requires SQL, database design, and programming skills; certifications like Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator are commonRequires SQL, database management, and troubleshooting skills; certifications like Oracle Certified Professional are common
Work EnvironmentProject-based, short-term contracts, often remote or on-siteOngoing, maintenance-focused roles, usually on-site or hybrid
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across tech, finance, healthcare for development projectsCommon in large enterprises, IT departments, and data management teams

While both roles involve working with databases, a Database Developer Contract focuses on designing and building databases for specific projects, often on a temporary basis. In contrast, a Database Administrator manages and maintains existing databases to ensure optimal performance and security on an ongoing basis.

Are database developers still in demand?

Database developers are still in demand as organizations continue to rely on data management and analysis. Skills in SQL, database design, and familiarity with platforms like Oracle, MySQL, or SQL Server remain valuable, especially in data-driven industries and environments requiring efficient data storage and retrieval.

Job description

We're building a world of health around every individual - shaping a more connected, convenient and compassionate health experience. At CVS Healthยฎ, you'll be surrounded by passionate colleagues who care deeply, innovate with purpose, hold ourselves accountable and prioritize safety and quality in everything we do. Join us and be part of something bigger - helping to simplify health care one person, one family and one community at a time.

Position Summary

We are hiring a Principal Software Engineer - a deeply handsโ€‘on technical leader who thrives on solving complex problems, writing production code, and elevating the engineers around them. You will serve as the senior engineering voice across a portfolio of missionโ€‘critical clinical decisionโ€‘support applications. These systems combine lowโ€‘latency distributed architectures with advanced LLM, OCR, and ML pipelines running on Google Cloud. This is not an "architectโ€‘fromโ€‘theโ€‘sidelines" role. You will actively design systems, write critical code, ship to production, support live environments, and mentor engineers across UI, backend, and ML. Success in this role is measured by the quality, performance, reliability, and clinical impact of what you deliverโ€”not by presentations.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Own architecture and execution โ€” Lead the technical direction of a realโ€‘time, multiโ€‘service clinical platform on GCP, while personally building the most critical and performanceโ€‘sensitive components.
  • Build productionโ€‘grade LLM systems โ€” Design and operate scalable LLM pipelines (e.g., Claude, Gemini, GPTโ€‘4โ€‘class) including prompt engineering, structured outputs, evaluation frameworks, retrieval/vector search, OCRโ€‘based document understanding, grounding, guardrails, and hallucination mitigation.
  • Deliver realโ€‘time, highโ€‘performance systems โ€” Architect distributed, eventโ€‘driven, streaming services that support subโ€‘second clinician experiences under heavy load, with strict SLOs and strong fault tolerance.
  • Operationalize machine learning โ€” Lead deployment and lifecycle management of models on Vertex AI, including feature pipelines, model registries, drift detection, A/B and shadow testing, and CI/CDโ€‘integrated quality controls.
  • Design for scalability and change โ€” Build flexible APIs, microservices, and data contracts that support rapid iteration, backed by strong testing, observability, and progressive delivery practices.
  • Raise the engineering bar โ€” Drive highโ€‘quality code reviews, establish standards across testing, CI/CD, security, and observability, and mentor engineers across fullโ€‘stack and ML disciplines.
  • Own outcomes endโ€‘toโ€‘end โ€” Translate ambiguous clinical and business needs into delivered solutions, monitor realโ€‘world performance, and continuously iterate based on data.
  • Partner across disciplines โ€” Collaborate with Data Science, Product, Clinical SMEs, AI Governance, and Security teams to ensure solutions meet enterprise standards for compliance, privacy, and safety.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience with a strong record of delivering production systems at scale
  • 5+ years as a handsโ€‘on Staff or Principalโ€‘level engineer (actively coding, not removed from implementation)
  • Expert proficiency in Python including performance tuning, concurrency, and system optimization
  • 5+ years building realโ€‘time distributed systems (eventโ€‘driven, streaming, Pubโ€‘Sub) with clear latency and reliability requirements
  • 5+ years working in a major public cloud (GCP preferred: Vertex AI, GKE, Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, BigQuery, IAM, etc.)
  • Deep experience with microservices architecture, API design (REST), and resilient systems (retries, backpressure, tracing)
  • 3+ years building and operating production ML systems (MLOps, monitoring, retraining, deployment pipelines)
  • 3+ years developing LLMโ€‘powered applications in production, including prompt design, RAG/vector search, evaluation frameworks, and performance optimization
  • Experience building modern UI components with React or Angular
  • Strong computer science fundamentals, including distributed systems, algorithms, and concurrency
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience operating LLM systems in regulated environments (PII/PHI, governance, security, auditability)
  • Familiarity with vector databases (e.g., Vertex Vector Search, Pinecone, Weaviate, pgvector) and advanced retrieval techniques
  • Experience designing evaluation frameworks for LLM systems (gold datasets, regression testing, LLMโ€‘asโ€‘judge)
  • Strong background in CI/CD, SRE practices, and SLOโ€‘driven engineering
  • Experience with healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7) and compliance frameworks (HIPAA, HITRUST)
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex systems to both technical and nonโ€‘technical audiences
  • Proven track record of mentoring engineers into senior and staff roles
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related discipline is a plus
Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is: $144,200.00 - $288,400.00. This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual fullโ€‘time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.
