Position Summary:


The Senior Database Developer is responsible for designing, developing, optimizing, and supporting enterprise database solutions that enable secure, scalable, and high-performing applications. This role provides technical leadership for database design, performance optimization, data integration, and operational support across cloud-native environments, with a primary focus on AWS Aurora PostgreSQL and Amazon DynamoDB.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable database solutions using AWS Aurora PostgreSQL and Amazon DynamoDB in support of high-volume, mission-critical applications.
  • Design and implement logical and physical data models, database schemas, indexes, views, stored procedures, functions, and database objects to support application requirements.
  • Develop, enhance, and troubleshoot complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and database code to ensure optimal application performance and data integrity.
  • Perform database performance analysis and tuning, including query optimization, indexing strategies, execution-plan analysis, partitioning, and resource utilization monitoring.
  • Investigate and resolve database-related production issues, bottlenecks, deadlocks, locking/contention issues, replication concerns, and data inconsistencies.
  • Design and optimize DynamoDB data models, partition key strategies, secondary indexes, and access patterns to support scalability and performance requirements.
  • Build and maintain ETL/ELT processes, data integration pipelines, and data migration solutions across relational and NoSQL data platforms.
  • Collaborate with application developers, architects, DevSecOps engineers, and cloud engineers to define efficient data access patterns and database integration approaches.
  • Implement database monitoring, capacity planning, backup/recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure system reliability and availability.
  • Ensure compliance with security, governance, auditing, and data protection requirements, including implementation of encryption, access controls, and least-privilege principles.
  • Participate in root cause analysis, performance reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives for database operations and application performance.
  • Support database deployments through CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code processes within AWS cloud environments.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development and database management tools to improve productivity, code quality, troubleshooting, and automation.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of hands-on database development and database engineering experience supporting enterprise applications.
  • Strong expertise in AWS Aurora PostgreSQL, including schema design, query development, stored procedures/functions, indexing, execution-plan analysis, and performance optimization.
  • Experience designing, implementing, and supporting Amazon DynamoDB solutions, including data modeling, partition/key design, Global Secondary Indexes (GSIs), Local Secondary Indexes (LSIs), and query optimization.
  • Advanced SQL development skills with the ability to create, modify, and troubleshoot complex queries, views, stored procedures, functions, and database objects.
  • Strong understanding of relational database design principles, normalization, denormalization, and data modeling best practices.
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving database performance issues, including slow queries, locking/contention, deadlocks, indexing inefficiencies, and resource bottlenecks.
  • Experience analyzing query execution plans and implementing tuning recommendations to improve scalability and application performance.
  • Experience developing and supporting ETL/ELT processes and data integration solutions.
  • Familiarity with AWS database services, including Aurora PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, RDS, S3, and data migration services.
  • Working knowledge of database monitoring, backup/recovery, high availability, disaster recovery, and operational support practices.
  • Experience implementing data security controls, encryption, access management, auditing, and compliance requirements.
  • Experience supporting cloud-native applications in AWS environments using CI/CD and DevSecOps practices.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex production issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AWS Certified Database Specialty, AWS Certified Developer Associate, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect certification.
  • Experience supporting Federal Government systems and environments requiring security controls and compliance frameworks.
  • Experience with high-volume transactional processing systems, large-scale data platforms, or regulatory reporting applications.
  • Experience with PostgreSQL administration and performance tuning in AWS Aurora environments.
  • Experience with database observability and monitoring tools such as Amazon CloudWatch, Performance Insights, Datadog, Splunk, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with AWS Redshift, AWS Glue, DMS, Lake Formation, or modern data platform architectures.
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK).
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development and database optimization tools.
