What does a database DBA do?

A Database DBA, or Database Administrator, is responsible for managing and maintaining databases to ensure their performance, security, and reliability. They handle tasks such as installing and upgrading database software, backing up data, optimizing database systems, and troubleshooting issues. DBAs also implement security measures to protect sensitive information and ensure databases run efficiently to support business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a database DBA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Database DBA, you need strong expertise in database design, administration, and performance tuning, often backed by a degree in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with database management systems such as Oracle, SQL Server, or MySQL, and certifications like Oracle Certified Professional or Microsoft Certified Database Administrator, are typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication help DBAs manage complex data environments and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are vital to ensure data integrity, system reliability, and optimal performance in supporting business operations.

What are some common challenges database DBAs face when managing large-scale databases, and how can they be addressed?

Database DBAs often encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability, optimizing performance, and managing data security in large-scale environments. Handling these issues typically involves proactive monitoring, regular performance tuning, implementing robust backup and disaster recovery plans, and staying updated with the latest security patches. Collaboration with developers and system administrators is also key to troubleshooting and optimizing database operations. Continuous learning and adapting to new database technologies can help DBAs stay effective in managing complex database systems.

Job description

Samsung SDS America is the North American technology and digital transformation arm of Samsung SDS, a global leader in IT services, cloud, artificial intelligence, enterprise platforms, cybersecurity, and logistics solutions. We partner closely with Samsung's industry-leading businesses-including Samsung Electronics, Samsung Semiconductor, Samsung Display, and Samsung Research-to design, implement, and support innovative technology solutions that accelerate business performance.

In addition to supporting Samsung affiliates, Samsung SDS America works with enterprise customers across a wide range of industries, helping organizations modernize their technology ecosystems through cloud transformation, data management, cybersecurity, AI, enterprise applications, and digital innovation. Our teams combine deep technical expertise with a collaborative, customer-focused approach to deliver secure, scalable, and business-critical solutions.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Database Administrator to manage, optimize, and secure enterprise database environments while maintaining the highest standards for performance, availability, and data integrity. This role places a strong emphasis on protecting Personally Identifiable Information (PII) through encryption, access controls, and other data protection technologies.

The ideal candidate will possess both traditional database administration expertise and a strong understanding of database security, ensuring enterprise databases remain highly available, compliant, and protected against evolving security risks.

Responsibilities

Database Administration

  • Install, configure, administer, and maintain enterprise relational database platforms, including MS SQL, PostgreSQL, and SQL Server.
  • Monitor database performance and system health, proactively tuning queries, indexes, and storage to maximize efficiency.
  • Manage database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity.
  • Maintain highly available database environments through replication, clustering, and failover technologies.
  • Perform capacity planning, database upgrades, patch management, and lifecycle maintenance activities.
  • Troubleshoot complex database issues while partnering with application development teams on schema design, query optimization, and overall database performance improvements.

Database Security & PII Encryption

  • Design, implement, and maintain encryption solutions for databases containing Personally Identifiable Information (PII), ensuring data is protected both at rest and in transit.
  • Administer encryption keys and integrate databases with enterprise Key Management Systems (KMS) and Hardware Security Modules (HSM).
  • Implement appropriate encryption methodologies, including Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), column-level encryption, and tablespace encryption.
  • Establish and enforce data masking, tokenization, and role-based access controls for sensitive information.
  • Collaborate with Information Security and Compliance teams to ensure adherence to applicable regulatory frameworks, including GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS, and CCPA.
  • Conduct routine audits of database access, security configurations, and encryption controls to identify and mitigate risk.
  • Support security investigations and incident response activities involving database security or potential data exposure.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as a Database Administrator or in a closely related role.
  • Strong hands-on experience administering one or more enterprise relational database platforms, including SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing database encryption technologies such as Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), column-level encryption, or equivalent solutions.
  • Experience working with enterprise key management practices and technologies.
  • Strong understanding of database security principles, access controls, auditing, and data protection best practices.
  • Experience designing and supporting backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and high-availability database environments.
  • Solid knowledge of SQL performance tuning and database optimization techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience administering cloud-hosted database platforms such as AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, or Google Cloud SQL.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and privacy compliance frameworks including GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, and PCI-DSS.
  • Experience developing automation scripts using Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
  • Industry certifications related to database administration or cloud database technologies (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server Certification, AWS Database Specialty).
