Job description

Reports to an Information Systems (IS) Manager. Ensures the accuracy, integrity, availability, performance, and security of all assigned databases. This includes analysis, implementation and support for databases. The Level II and III positions have increasing levels of responsibility and autonomy and provide training and mentoring to the Level I and II Database Administrators (DBAs) respectively, as well as providing project management for small to medium projects, and utilize process improvement techniques.

Ensures the accuracy, integrity, and security of all assigned databases by:

  • Monitoring performance for, backing up, restoring, and upgrading assigned databases.
  • Allocating system storage and planning future storage requirements for the databases.
  • Utilizing tools to effectively monitor and maintain databases.
  • Creating disaster recovery plans for all assigned databases in conjunction with other IS staff.
  • Evaluating and implementing new products that will work with and/or replace current database software and tools.
  • Level II and III - Participating with IS management in monitoring database security.

Provides project planning, analysis, implementation and support for databases by:

  • Participating in projects from initiation through finalization.
  • Undertaking special projects at the direction of an IS Manager, Director or the Vice President/Chief Information Officer (CIO).
  • Performing application troubleshooting, problem solving, fine tuning, repairs and maintenance.
  • Level II - Providing project management for small to medium projects.
  • Level II and Level III

Performing more complex trouble-shooting and problem solving.

  • Level III - Providing project management for medium to large projects.

Provides training to IS staff as requested by the IS Manager or Director by:

  • Assisting in problem analysis of programs interacting with databases.
  • Providing training to IS staff in all areas of database development.
  • Counseling Systems Analysts on complex database-related issues.
  • Level II - Mentoring the IS staff, including the Database Administrators (Level I).
  • Level III - Mentoring the IS staff, including the Database Administrators (Level II).

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Providing excellent customer service at all times. Also, communicating with customers and other staff in a courteous, responsive and helpful manner.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with IS team members.
  • Monitoring trends and developments in information technology; also, communicating new technology and enhancements.
  • Participating in IS Department process improvement initiatives.
  • Maintaining department records, reports, and files and providing database documentation, as required.
  • Assisting in the care and maintenance of department facilities, equipment, and supplies.
  • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed by the Manager, Director or Vice President/Chief Information Officer (CIO).
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience

  • In addition to the requirements listed below, the Level III position requires five to seven years of progressively more responsible experience in a related field. Candidates must also have demonstrated the ability to successfully perform the following tasks:

Knowledge & Skills

  • Requires a high level of knowledge of operating system functionality and database security.
  • Requires the Oracle or Microsoft database administration skills necessary in network monitoring, fine tuning, maintaining, backing up, and restoring databases.
  • Requires the strong analytical skills necessary to gather, analyze, and interpret data in order to identify and resolve database issues.
  • Requires good business skills and works effectively to build working relationships with client departments.
  • Demonstrates the strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written, necessary to interact effectively with all levels of Memorial staff and vendors in a courteous, responsive, and helpful manner.
  • Research new and existing technology to provide knowledgeable direction and solutions regarding organizational databases.
  • Solve complex issues.
  • Advanced support of both Oracle and Microsoft databases.
  • Design complex databases.
  • Support more complex Business Intelligence activities by designing and developing database structures and routines for data manipulation.
  • Maintenance of a database certification is highly desirable.

Working Conditions

  • Works in an office environment.
  • May experience some mental/visual fatigue due to continued use of computer equipment.
  • Requires the ability to work a flexible schedule. May be asked to work different shifts to fill in as needed for go-live support, vacation/sick leave, or planned/unplanned outages.

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position.
