To thrive as a Data Visualization Graphic Designer, you need expertise in graphic design principles, data interpretation, and proficiency with design software, typically supported by a degree in graphic design, data science, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Tableau, Power BI, and data visualization libraries like D3.js is commonly required. Strong attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help convey complex data in visually compelling and easily understandable ways. These skills are crucial for transforming raw data into actionable insights that drive decision-making and user engagement.

Is data visualization a good career?

Data visualization is a growing field within data analysis and design, with demand for professionals skilled in tools like Tableau, Power BI, and Adobe Illustrator. It offers opportunities in various industries such as finance, healthcare, and technology, often requiring strong analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex data clearly. The career can be rewarding with competitive salaries and opportunities for advancement, especially for those with a background in graphic design, data analysis, or related certifications.

What is a data visualization graphic designer?

A Data Visualization Graphic Designer is a professional who specializes in transforming complex data and information into visually engaging and easily understandable graphics, such as charts, infographics, and dashboards. They use design principles and data analysis skills to communicate insights effectively to various audiences. A Data Visualization Graphic Designer frequently works alongside data analysts to interpret complex datasets and transform them into visually engaging, easily understandable graphics. Early in a project, designers meet with stakeholders to clarify objectives and gather requirements. Throughout the process, they iterate on design concepts, incorporating feedback to ensure that visuals accurately reflect the data's story and meet audience needs. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as designers must balance aesthetics, clarity, and accuracy while supporting stakeholders’ goals.

Job description

Ready to use design to make complex health care information clear, engaging, and actionable?
Join our Communications and External Affairs Team as a Graphic Designer and help turn data-heavy reports, presentations, and public-facing materials into visuals that policymakers, stakeholders, and the public can quickly understand and use.
At the Center for Health Information and Analysis (CHIA), we are stewards of Massachusetts health data, using multifaceted datasets and advanced analytics to support transparency in the health care system. Our work informs data-driven policies that improve the quality and equity of care while helping keep costs affordable for Massachusetts residents.
As the Graphic Designer, you will help create polished reports, presentations, digital content, and other materials that make CHIA's work visually engaging and easy to navigate. Reporting to the Art Director, you will coordinate multiple deliverables, support project tracking and timelines, apply robust design judgment, and work closely with colleagues. This role is ideal for a creative, detail-oriented designer who can balance independent ownership with thoughtful collaboration.
The Graphic Designer will support a range of external- and internal-facing materials, including:
  • Reports and publications: Design and layout polished reports, briefs, executive summaries, presentations, templates, and related communications materials using Adobe Creative Cloud tools, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as well as Microsoft Office tools such as Word and PowerPoint.
  • Data visualizations: Develop charts, infographics, icons, and illustrations, including conceptual ways to represent abstract ideas, that make technical information easier to understand while preserving accuracy, context, and nuance.
  • Social media and animations: Create engaging social media graphics and simple animations that highlight key findings.
  • Templates and brand standards: Build and maintain templates, style guides, and reusable visual assets that support consistent communications across recurring publications and projects.

Duties include:
  • Coordinate with communications, research, policy, and data colleagues to translate complex health care analysis into clear visual narratives.
  • Prepare accurate, accessible, on-brand materials for digital publication, ensuring compliance with WCAG 2.1 Level AA guidelines.
  • Proofread and review final materials for formatting, alignment, consistency, and overall production quality.
  • Coordinate feedback from multiple reviewers and revise designs efficiently while meeting deadlines.

Here are the important qualifications we are looking for:
  • Educational foundation: Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Communication Design, Digital Media, Data Visualization, or a related field.
  • Professional experience: Minimum of 2 or more years of professional graphic design experience, preferably creating reports, data visualizations, digital materials, presentations, or other public-facing communications.
  • Design skills: Ability to interpret briefs, develop concepts, respond to feedback, and transform complex information into accurate, engaging visual designs, illustrations, and icons.
  • Conceptual thinking: Curiosity, sound design judgment, and the ability to develop thoughtful visual solutions that make complex information clear and engaging.
  • Software: Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, and Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; experience with Canva, simple animations, and video/motion graphics is a plus.
  • Communication and collaboration: Excellent oral, written, and people skills, with the ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Quality and consistency: Strong self-editing and proofreading skills, with careful attention to accuracy, accessibility, formatting, and brand standards.
  • Adaptability and growth mindset: Flexibility, willingness to learn, and comfort embracing evolving technologies, project needs, art direction, and feedback.
  • Presentation and training support: Willingness to present work to peers and senior staff and contribute to training materials and guideline documents.
  • Portfolio: Please include cover letter and a link to online portfolio.
