Data Transfer information

What is a data transfer?

A Data Transfer job involves the movement of data between different systems, storage devices, or platforms while ensuring data integrity, security, and compliance. Professionals in this role may handle large-scale migrations, backups, or cloud transfers using specialized tools and protocols. They also troubleshoot transfer issues, optimize data flow, and ensure minimal downtime during the process.

What are some of the common challenges faced by data transfer specialists?

Data transfer specialists often face challenges such as working with large volumes of sensitive information while maintaining data integrity and security throughout the migration process. Complexities may arise when dealing with incompatible systems, legacy platforms, or limited downtime windows for critical business operations. Effective collaboration with IT, data owners, and project managers is key to overcoming these obstacles and ensuring a smooth transfer. Developing strong troubleshooting skills also helps address unexpected issues quickly and minimize disruption to the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the data transfer position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Data Transfer role, you need strong attention to detail, data management experience, and an understanding of data privacy regulations, typically supported by a degree in information technology or a related field. Familiarity with data migration tools, database management systems, and file transfer protocols is essential; certifications in data management or cloud services can be advantageous. Excellent organizational skills, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you adapt to changing project requirements and coordinate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring accurate, secure, and timely data transfers that support key business operations.

Job description

Cross Domain Engineer – Data Transfer / AWS Diode (Low-to-High Pipelines)

Location: Chantilly, VA (preferred)
Work Type: Onsite / Hybrid
Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship required
Clearance: Active Top Secret/SCI clearance required

The Opportunity

Strategic Business Systems (SBS) is expanding our team to support a high-priority, mission-critical national security program. We are building out secure data movement capabilities across classification boundaries and are looking for engineers who understand how to design and implement low-to-high data transfer solutions in controlled environments.

This role is focused on developing and supporting Cross Domain Solutions (CDS), including AWS data diode architectures, to enable secure, compliant movement of data between networks of differing classification levels. You’ll play a key role in enabling mission systems—both on-prem and in AWS classified environments—to share data safely while maintaining strict security controls.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Design and implement low-to-high data pipelines across classification boundaries
  • Support and integrate Cross Domain Solutions (CDS), including data diodes and guard technologies
  • Build secure data ingestion, validation, and transfer mechanisms into AWS environments and on-prem systems
  • Develop and enforce data filtering, formatting, and content inspection rules
  • Integrate CDS pipelines with AWS services, HPC systems, and enterprise applications
  • Support deployment of pipelines into AWS classified regions (e.g., GovCloud or other secure environments)
  • Implement logging, monitoring, and audit capabilities for cross-domain transfers
  • Support testing, accreditation, and operational deployment of CDS capabilities
What We’re Looking For

Cross Domain / CDS Experience

  • Hands‑on experience with Cross Domain Solutions (CDS) or similar secure data transfer systems
  • Familiarity with data diode architectures and one‑way transfer mechanisms
  • Understanding of low-to-high data flow constraints and approval processes

AWS / Cloud Integration

  • Experience integrating systems with AWS services (S3, EC2, Lambda, API Gateway, etc.)
  • Understanding of secure data ingestion patterns into AWS
  • Familiarity with VPC design, private endpoints, and restricted network architectures
  • Experience working in or supporting AWS GovCloud or classified regions (preferred)

Data & Integration

  • Experience building data pipelines and transformation workflows
  • Understanding of data formats (JSON, XML, CSV, etc.) and validation techniques
  • Ability to integrate across cloud and on‑prem environments

Security & Compliance

  • Strong understanding of classified or regulated environments
  • Familiarity with NCDSMO, Raise-the-Bar (RTB), or CDS accreditation processes
  • Experience implementing data inspection, sanitization, and filtering controls

Systems & Infrastructure

  • Linux background with scripting (Python, Bash, etc.)
  • Understanding of networking fundamentals and secure data transfer protocols

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Radiant Mercury, Owl Cyber Defense, Everfox, or similar CDS tools
  • Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) in secure environments
  • Experience supporting ATO or compliance-driven deployments
Why SBS

SBS supports mission‑critical programs where secure data movement is essential. Our teams work at the intersection of cross-domain security and cloud enablement, helping customers move data safely into modern platforms like AWS.

You’ll be part of a team that:

  • Solves complex cross‑domain and cloud integration challenges
  • Supports high‑visibility national security efforts
  • Builds real, operational capabilities—not just concepts
