What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Scientist, you need a strong background in statistics, programming (often Python or R), and data analysis, typically supported by a degree in computer science, mathematics, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning frameworks, data visualization tools, and big data platforms like TensorFlow, Tableau, and Hadoop, as well as certifications in data science, are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving skills, curiosity, and the ability to communicate complex findings clearly set outstanding data scientists apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for extracting actionable insights from data, driving business decisions, and collaborating effectively with stakeholders.

What do data scientists do?

Data scientists collect, confirm, and interpret data to determine useful information for their employer. They help organizations identify patterns and trends in their data to provide information about lucrative opportunities, necessary improvements, and potential innovations. The information data scientists get from the records they gather helps businesses make major decisions in critical areas, such as product development, sales and marketing techniques, and client retention. Data scientists are highly educated; the majority of them have at least a master's degrees, and many have doctorates. Data scientists are valuable members of organizations in many different industries, including pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, and banking.

What are some typical projects data scientists work on, and how do they collaborate with other teams?

Data Scientists often work on projects such as building predictive models, analyzing large datasets to uncover trends, and developing data-driven solutions to business problems. They regularly collaborate with cross-functional teams, including software engineers, data engineers, and business analysts, to ensure that their insights are actionable and aligned with business goals. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as Data Scientists frequently need to present complex findings to non-technical stakeholders and incorporate feedback from various departments.

What is the difference between Data Scientist vs Data Analyst?

AspectData Scientist
Required CredentialsDegree in Computer Science, Statistics, or related field; often requires advanced degrees
Work EnvironmentResearch and development, predictive modeling, machine learning projects
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, finance, healthcare, consulting firms
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared due to overlapping skills in data analysis and modeling

Data Scientists focus on building predictive models, advanced analytics, and machine learning, often requiring higher-level technical skills and education. Data Analysts primarily interpret existing data, generate reports, and support decision-making with descriptive analytics. While both roles analyze data, Data Scientists handle complex modeling and predictive tasks, whereas Data Analysts focus on data interpretation and reporting.

Is a data scientist job still in demand?

Yes, data scientist roles remain in high demand across various industries due to the increasing reliance on data-driven decision making. Skills in machine learning, statistical analysis, and programming languages like Python or R are highly valued, and employment opportunities continue to grow as organizations seek to leverage big data for competitive advantage.

What does a data scientist do exactly?

A data scientist analyzes large datasets to extract insights, build predictive models, and support decision-making. They use statistical techniques, programming languages like Python or R, and tools such as SQL and machine learning algorithms to interpret data and solve complex problems.

Job Summary
ย

Moultrie is looking for a Dataย Scientistย to join the growing Data and Analytics Team. This team ownsย theย development of insightsย from extractionย that power decision-making across Moultrie. This role will build the predictive and prescriptive modeling capabilities that sit on top of the foundational data layer to surface actionable insights and recommendations within BI products and downstream systems. You will own the statistical modeling and feature engineering that exists in the Data ย

  • Data Layer & Feature Store: Snowflakeย

  • Model Deployment: Snowflake ML Functions, Snowparkย

  • Development: Python, SQLย

  • Feature store: Snowflakeย

  • Experiment Tracking: MLflowย

Typical work includes building and maintainingย feature stores Snowflake/dbt, training and validating predictive models against curated datasets, and delivering model outputs as attributes made available in datasetsย ready for downstream tools. ย

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with applied predictive modeling in a business context (churn prediction, customer health scores, propensity scoring) and can contribute to the data work required to support it. This role will work closely with the other members of the Data and Analytics team as well as business stakeholders to align work with highest business impact.

Job Responsibilities

Predictive and Prescriptive Modelingย

  • Design, build, andย maintainย predictive models that address defined business questions (customer churn,ย subscription health, purchase propensity) using data from the foundational layer in Snowflake.ย  ย

  • Deliver model outputsย as attributes that can integrate cleanly into downstream BI products (Tableau,ย Streamlit) and activation platforms (BlueConic, Braze,ย TripleWhale).ย

  • Work with business stakeholders to translate ambiguous questions into scoped modeling problems with defined success metrics. ย

  • Communicate model outputs and their business implications clearly to non-technical audiences. ย

  • Track, document, and monitor experiments and deployed modelsย to ensureย outputs are reliable, understandable, and reproduceable. ย

Feature Store and Data Engineeringย ย

  • Contribute to the build and maintenance of features in the feature store: defining features, documenting refresh cadence,ย and ensuring feature pipelines are reliable and tested. ย

  • Build andย maintainย training datasetsย with clear documentation of assumptions, evaluation windows, and limitations. ย

  • Work with data engineers to ensure data models are structured to support feature engineering and model training. ย

  • Ability to apply data engineering fundamentals (SQL modelling, versional control, documentation) to contribute to the feature store and buildย statistical models that integrate into the existing foundational tech stack.ย

Job Requirements

Skills and Qualificationsย

  • 4+ yearsย of hands-on experience in data science or a role with significant applied modelling. ย

  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying predictive models in a business context. ย

  • Strong Pythonย proficiency:ย Proven experience usingย libraries (scikit-learn, pandas) to build andย maintainย predictive models. ย

  • Experience with classification and regression techniques and the ability toย validateย model performance usingย appropriate metricsย (precision, recall, AUC, etc.).ย

  • SQLย proficiency:ย Able to write clean, maintainable codeย for supporting modelsย in Snowflakeย with support from data engineers. ย

  • Experience with Git and standard software development practices: version control, code reviews, branching, and CI/CD basics. ย

  • Ability toย takeย an ambiguous business problem and work backwards to produce models that support effective solutions by creating a list of requirements andย working through sprints to deliver.ย

  • Strong documentation practices: able to produce andย maintainย model definitions, lineage documentation, and data dictionaries that enable other developers and business stakeholders. ย

  • Collaborative working style: comfortable operating at the boundary between data engineering,ย data science, and business teams. ย

Preferred Qualificationsย

  • Experience in retail, CPG, or consumer hardware. ย

  • Hands-on experience with a feature store platform. ย

  • Experience withย MLflowย or a comparable experiment tracking tool. ย
